I disagree. Sounds like OP has skipped a few steps and landed at a decision to reluctantly cut his friend loose because he doesn’t know what to do about his frustrating relationship. He says it’s a shame and that he doesn’t want to say goodbye, which suggests he’d like there to be a better outcome. Be direct about it I think. If it doesn’t work out, so be it. At least you tried. He clearly can’t respect your boundaries for wanting to stop/cutback drinking, and if he has done that on multiple occasions I think that is enough to warrant saying bye to your friend. I do agree with other people that he sounds like he has mental health problems though. Try get him out and about if you can. I think the LEATHERFACE POSSE Shirt and I love this best I can suggest is to take what you’ve written here and have this conversation with your friend rather than a bunch of random people on the internet. He may be receptive to it and you may be able to work out a new way forward for your friendship, or you may find out that the friendship is no longer what it was and it’s time to sever ties.
