If you are back office, showing up showered and in clean non-wrinkled clothes will put you on management track. Personally as a woman I would like them. Men don’t tend to display any sort of personal style beyond “my mom bought this for me 6 years ago” I have always had earrings and nobody ever has seemed to care but I always dress and present myself nicer than 99% of people. To be safe, I’d probably start without them and figure out what the vibe is first. It’s honestly probably fine, as long as you’re dressed professionally, but you’ll be a lot more comfortable and confident if you already know what kind of workplace this is. Guess it depends on the company and the people you work with. If they don’t have a problem with it then it’s fine. However, since your mom is older, I see where she is coming from. We’ve seen the level of professionalism drop in the last decade to where people come to work looking sloppy. I get tech is different but it doesn’t mean you have to follow the trend. My husband has had both ears pierced since before I met him 26 years ago – he’s never taken them out (not for job interviews, weddings, etc) – if you interviewed with them on, wear them! Yes. You will lose opportunities. People will like you less. You will be more likely to receive less favorable reviews. Basically it’s a negative in every way. You will make less money. The only positive is that some people feel good thinking they don’t care what other people think and that they have a feeling of self expression and stuff. But that’s just a personal feeling.
