If your employer fails to provide these breaks, then he is in violation of California labor laws and must provide you with an hour of work compensation per violation. There is plenty of work for plumbers. I would suggest you find a new job. Boss sounds like an absolute jerkoff. In Cali iirc it either rounds up, down, or to the Venice high school symbol shirt in addition I really love this nearest 15 IN ALL CASES. So if 2 minutes late is the same as 15 minutes late, 2 minutes overtime is the same as 15 minutes overtime To get around it being unauthorized let’s say you have a 10 minute task left to do, ask your boss “hey so should I just finish up X and clock out when I’m done?” Boom authorization. Now this method WILL probably result in you needing to find another job but dude’s an asshole so you should be looking anyway. Just fuck him on the way out The rounding up if it’s 8 minutes and rounding down if it’s 7 is pretty standard everywhere in Cali. It gets rounded to the nearest 15 minute mark- either down if it’s 9:07 and up if it’s 9:08 for example. There’s no hardline rule, but the rounding policy must be neutral, meaning it can’t consistently disadvantage the employee. Always rounding down is illegal. If he wants to nickel and dime your time? Take all your breaks and your lunch, follow the rules and don’t work extra. Most times people aren’t paid for their lunch break, so youve been working for free.

Starting with 0 experience that’s about right for trades, most you get regular raises over time and/or as you get various certifications Depends VASTLY on the Venice high school symbol shirt in addition I really love this trade, location, union/ non-union, and level of experience. I work with a lot of union electricians in SF- they start apprentices at like $29/hours. Non union plumbers in the Central Valley start at like $18/hour. I work in CA too, so I can tell you that working away from the office, you can take your lunch break whenever you want, technically, since you’re not punching in and out of the time clock. But, even tho I don’t have to actually punch out and back in when I’m done, I can’t say I’m leaving early, and using my lunch period as validation. When you punch out to go home, if you punch out 30 min early, the company doesn’t have to pay you the extra 30 min, since you’d technically be telling them “I worked my entire shift without a meal break” which is illegal in the state. Working out in the field, you don’t have to call in when taking your break, you just take it, and then go back to work. If your truck/van/whatever has a gps monitor on it, then they can see where you go, if you leave the work site you’re supposed to be at, so they can actually tell if you take a longer the required break.
