My grandparents, so my daughter’s great grandparents, are both 80. They live on a lake in MN, have a boat, a jetski, 4 bedrooms, a truck and a car both less than 10 years old. She asked me, “What did great grandma and great grandpa do for jobs when they were younger?” I responded “Great grandpa worked for the Toots And The Maytals Jamaican musical group ska and rocksteady T-Shirt and I love this state, mostly maintaining stop lights. Great grandma was a secretary at a college.” Her response was to go super quiet for half a minute and then she said “So you can get rich doing those jobs?” This kid is 6!! She already realizes something isn’t adding up. If my husband had the same exact job that he has now, but set in the 1970s, we would be absolutely rolling in money. Instead we both have to work full-time to afford a 3 bedroom tract house (that we are super thankful for), and we’ve never had a real vacation. Trips, yes, we can afford ONE overnight in a hotel so we don’t go very far. I also cannot imagine a world where any of our friends would be able to afford a third child. They all have zero, one, or two, and it all comes down to money. System is messed up.My mother once mentioned she went through lawschool for $1,500 a year and I told her I didn’t want her to tell me that ever again.

My dad worked fueling airplanes for a small plane airport and his boss would garnish his wages and cut him a tuition check every semester. That is fucking mind blowing. I was making $15/hr making pizzas and it would’ve taken me a year of work to set aside that much money to cover tuition. Luckily my dad took advantage of all that and was able to cover all my tuition and expenses while I was in college or I would’ve been as fucked as everyone else. Sometimes I think my dad thinks I am lying about how much I work. Like I MUST be calling out and have multiple days off because of how little I have to show for my 40 hour work week. Bruh, my dad was telling me about the Toots And The Maytals Jamaican musical group ska and rocksteady T-Shirt and I love this money he made as a 14 year old being paid cash under the table as a parking lot attendant for stadiums and concerts. My mom was telling me I should have bought a house by now because she bought one with a friend when they were 18, from saving money from working at the library while she was in high school. I asked her how much she made and she said “only $6.25/hr…” that was in the mid 60’s… Needless to say, once I did the inflation calculator, she wasn’t surprised that I was making less in my 30’s, she was surprised that SHE was making less in her 60’s…
