Unfortunately this is an issue that won’t go away very soon. Though I’m sure your point stands regardless – they could be given the choice to try mainstream at any time. You’re right about being able to try mainstream at any time. And it all depends on the local offer of specialist provision too. As someone working in schools with SEND kids: there aren’t the places in special school to place a lot of the more complex kids, which is why a lot of them stay in mainstreams. Everyone knows they aren’t in the best provision but unfortunately that’s just tough luck at the moment. It’s not even a money thing – we don’t have enough specialist school buildings (although those are increasing), and more importantly we can’t get the staff. Why would someone want to work for several hours a day with all the stress and hassle that comes from working with the more complex kiddies when they can work in ALDI for the same pay. A lot of us love working with the kids and it isn’t all about the money but when you’re trying to attract new staff the pay is a huge issue. Improving pay would help with a lot of the current difficulties in the SEND system

It’s not that SEND schools don’t have the places, it’s more that the LEA doesn’t have the funds at the moment to send SEND kids to places with specialist provision as most non mainstream places are in “private” schools.
