Around 20 years ago there was a push for inclusion in education, where children that would normally have attended alternative provision were encouraged to go to mainstream schools instead. Funding was shifted from specialist schools to mainstream schools and there was a push on training all teachers to plan lessons that work for all students. The main aim was to prevent the Thin Lizzy Celtic Ring shirt but in fact I love this divide in society that had been happening where many people didn’t even see people with disabilities, and had incorrect preconceptions about people with many types of learning difficulties, like people who were neurodivergent. Often this is a trial to see how they cope, but may also be because the offer they had before doesn’t exist now they’ve got to secondary school age. What tends to happen is that either they settle into it as they come to terms with the change (neurodivergent students in particular can be disruptive while they are anxious), and teachers learn to adapt for their needs, or they continue to struggle and they’re either moved to a different type of school or start to attend a specialist unit in the school, or have a reduced timetable.
