They don’t hire people off the Santa Doll Illustration Shirt and by the same token and street and pay them a grade level less to “see what they can do” first. They pay them some sort of market rate for the position. They need to do the same for internal promotions too. In addition to getting the terms in writing get a time frame for the title change and pay rise as well. And make it a reasonable time frame. A month, maybe 2. I had something similar happen several bosses ago. My bosses boss wanted to promote me and my boss said that I wasn’t ready. She told me that she wanted to see how I ran the department (which I was basically already doing anyway). After 6 months I went back to her and asked how I was doing and if she had any complaints. She said great, she was very pleased with how I had been handling things. I then asked her about the promotion and I’ll never forget the smirk on her face when she said, “Well X isn’t my boss anymore.” So no, no promotion, no pay rise but definitely a lesson learned. And yes, as others have suggested update your resume with your eventually gonna get it title and experience (I’d start shopping it, just in case).

Get hold of a list of your old boss’ duties and responsibilities. Ask whoever is overseeing you to state what exactly your job goals should be in order to qualify for the Santa Doll Illustration Shirt and by the same token and title and raise. If that person isn’t cooperative, try to come up with a list yourself. Email it to your boss, asking if this sounds right. Be sure to include a statement that, if he doesn’t reply, you will take that as his agreement. This was done to me in 2007. PM whacked on the project and I was asked to lead the Dev team and would be promoted. It was 2015 when that promotion finally occurred and only because I told HR I was suing them for constructive dismissal unless they handled it. I’d request that a meeting to reevaluate the pay raise be set out 90 days, and that you be supplied with your new documented roles and responsibilities. A transition plan should also be supplied in writing, where you are guided and mentored by senior management. You meet with them a minimum of every two weeks to make sure you are aligned on your progress and their expectations. There won’t be any money in the budget for your raise when you do “grow into your role” but they will have money to get 5 brand new trucks for management that doesn’t do field ever and don’t need trucks. 90 days probation in the roll, if they’re not happy with you in the position you get your old job back. If they want to keep you there, you get a raise commensurate with market rate for that position (do NOT tie it to your previous salary, you’re looking at a director level position.) Don’t play games, get it in writing. It’s a very straight forward proposition and there’s no reason for fuckery otherwise. Here is what they are trying to figure out. Can he do the job. Will he do the job and is he a good fit for the job.
