My oldest kid is 23 and my youngest is about to be a senior in high school. I’ve had to really shift my mindset. Of course I want them to get an education, get a good job, and be self-sufficient, but I worry so much about them being able to do that. The whole idea of tough love that many in my generation grew up with seems way more awful than it did decades ago. Then, if your parents cut you off, you really could make it. I’ll be honest. I live in a nice house, and we are not struggling. We also live in a low/mid COL town that is a good hour from a city with an airport. Our plan has always been to get the Mixhael myers terrorizing since 1978 retro halloween stars T-Shirt and I love this kids out in the world and downsize and reduce our footprint. Now I feel like I need us to keep enough space in case kids need to come back. An extra bedroom or two. A finished basement. I know there are those in the older generation that would call that enabling, but I know my kids. They want their freedom and don’t want to live with us. They’ve been raised to be self-sufficient. But this world and economy makes that really hard. My silent generation parents always made it clear that they were there for me, and I always knew I could come home, if needed. I never had to, but I will absolutely do the same for my Gen Z kids.

Good luck out there. Know that there are Gen Xers who understand, even if some may not be living the Mixhael myers terrorizing since 1978 retro halloween stars T-Shirt and I love this same. (Many are, though.) I’m 53, divorced. Started over from scratch, with nothing to my name. Doing it all on my own. My 28 year old son still lives at home. He makes good money now. Neither of us, nor his siblings, will ever be able to own our own homes. The first thing he bought went he got his job earlier this year was a car, because we were having to share mine. Neither one of us can save, because we’re too busy trying to survive. There’s no such thing as an inexpensive car anymore. Can’t buy a reliable, low miles used car for a reasonable price – just better off to buy new. 5 years ago, I said I would be never buy a new car again. Even that has changed. He works 12 hour days, 4 days a week. With an hour commute each way. Why? We live in a low COL town, that doesn’t pay a living wage. It breaks my heart to see him working so damn hard. Even 5 years ago, had he made the same wage he could have afforded to live on his own. If he moves closer to work, which he’s trying to do, with roommates, his expenses will increase.
