It’s a descriptor, the Marvey Coffee Mug Suits Tv Series Shirt and I will buy this same as saying the blonde guy or the guy with glasses. It only becomes racist when there’s stereotypes or assumptions or discrimination added into there. You were clarifying who was being asked about, noticing his skin color does not make you racist in any capacity. Of course you notice and are going to use the most obvious descriptor to clarify. Not racist but those words perpetuate the stereotype of the scary big black male. It has baggage and your better off just saying that guy over there or something else That wasn’t racist, but I’m guessing you’re in a group of all white people who are overly sensitive about being called racist. No. Racism involves making generalizations or assumptions about someone or a particular group based on their race. White people ( I’m one) we’re the worst. We think anything is racist if it’s not danced around or using politically correct terminology. In short, no. Your choice of descriptive words were not racist. They probably gasped because we all think of using those words but are too scared to actually do it (on the off chance someone irrelevant is offended) What you said was not racist but factual. Maybe it would’ve been more racist to ignore his ethnic differences… Nope, not racist. When I worked in Africa I would describe my husband as the big white guy. Racism is applying a value judgement to a race and stereotyping. I am native and I refer to myself as American Indian and have had white people correct me. I think folks who have not been around non-white people feel uncomfortable using terms that describe non-white people but most folks who aren’t white know the difference between a description and racism.

I guess it depends. If skin color was the Marvey Coffee Mug Suits Tv Series Shirt and I will buy this most-obvious/only differentiator, then sure. But if he was also the only person in a wheelchair, or with purple hair, or.. you get the idea.. then yes, using his skin color would have been a bad choice. But overall, you almost certainly could have come up with another way to make the same distinction. Better off avoiding using race/ethnicity where possible. It’s a loaded topic for many, you might not mind it but no need to force the issue. At my old job we had two Drews; Drew and Jrue. One was black one was white. I referred to Jrue as the black Jrue, he heard me and told me that there were so many other ways to describe him outside of black that he was hurt that was the first thing I thought of about him. I think a context matters, but you probably could have said “you mean the guy in the blue shirt” or “you mean the really tall guy” and still gotten your point across. It’s not racist in a structural and prejudice way, but there’s also more to people than their race. I’m black. Yes you can describe me as the black lady. No you cannot describe me as the big black lady because that would be inaccurate as I’m not tall enough or wide enough to be called big. Yes my ancestors have been in America for as far back as anyone in my family knows. No I don’t like term African American because at this point we have no direct ties to Africa and my culture is very very different from any recent African Americans. Yes all of the African Americans I know and black Americans I know get along great despite very interesting and sometimes hilarious cultural differences.
