I taught English in 2019 at a middle school. There were four classes total, in a school meant for three times that number of students. An entire building was just empty, and slated for demolition. And I learned later that the Just a girl in love with her Bruce Dickinson shirt so you should to go to store and get this school would actually be torn down in a few years and all the remaining students moved to a nearby middle school. This wasn’t even in a rural area. Just FYI to anyone looking into these programs, YMMV heavily. I had a friend who applied through JET or a similar program to teach in Japan. She wasn’t paid well, she was worked to the bone, when she took off from work because she was very sick, she got heavily reprimanded for it. She had issues getting medication when she was sick. She got incredibly depressed. After doing it for a number of years, she decided that for her mental and physical health she just couldn’t do it anymore, despite how much she loved her students and Japan, and she moved back to the US. Her story is not the only one like this. There are others who have really good experiences, but keep in mind that if you go over there and have a bad time … you’re in a whole other country on a VISA and locked in a contract for at least a year.

To be honest, this was my experience. I didn’t think culture shock would hit me as I’d done plenty of international travel before. But living over there ended up being a whole new beast. The lifestyle just didn’t jive with me, and I felt incredibly alone as all my close friends were 12 hours off from me and halfway around the Just a girl in love with her Bruce Dickinson shirt so you should to go to store and get this world. The work itself wasn’t hard, but I found myself getting anxious every day regardless, which really tanked my mental health. I ended up leaving after only six months. I was really disappointed because I did love my students. But it just wasn’t for me. Dave’s ESL Cafe is a great place to find teaching jobs not just in Japan but around the world https://www.eslcafe.com/ Yet Japan is still closed effectively to external immigration. Nor do they accept refugees at any reasonable numbers.
