My style tends toward darker colors and I like a balance of masculine & feminine elements too (for work: think a dark printed dress with motorcycle boots, or pleated 1940s-style wool trousers with a tucked-in printed blouse in a dark color. On weekends: black wide-legged trousers with a graphic tee or a sweater + printed scarf, black and white Vejas). It’s not a problem for work because I have a laptop bag that I like. But weekends and evenings are problematic. I have been perusing purse forums and The RealReal and while I have come to admire the I Teach Little People To Read Kind Of A Big Deal Book T-Shirt and I love this artistry of some purse designs, I have come to some conclusions about what I dislike: logo bags, bags with chain straps (reads as hyper femme to me) and really structured bags (although structured bags appear to be super in right now, these also read as hyper femme to me). I like satchel- and doctor-bag styles in neutral colors other than black. For day, I just ordered a super beat-up Mulberry Alexa in dark green from The RealReal. I am eying an Eve Crossbody in black from AllSaints for evening (the quilting plus the heavy hardware read as a pleasingly femme/masc balance). I am very, VERY picky about handbags, and don’t have a ton compared to the amount of clothes I have, possibly because I am so picky. They have to be large enough to hold my work padfolio (14×10), have to be in that ladylike/triangle shape with a tophandle, have to be leather, have to not be otherwise casual or informal, has to have little to no logos/branding or any bling, even a metal chain strap (so all Chanels are out!). It is the size that really makes it difficult – hard to get that large without it being a tote and also in the shape I want. Plus large top handle bags get HEAVY and have been known to throw my back out of wack, so I don’t carry my laptop in them anymore. I’d like some smaller ones for parties but they just haven’t been my priority.
