The main critique of these English teachers I see on reddit is that they teach it like a STEM class with an objective answer. Usually when I see posts like this people mistake the I Have the Power Chord Shirt but in fact I love this term symbolism for a catch all term for any sort of deeper meaning to a written work. JRR Tolkien famously hated when people spoke about his books this way (but in regard to the term Allegory instead of symbolism). A similar thing happened as well with Hideaki Anno with Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fans read way too deeply into it and ask if it’s symbolism and he’s like, “these are literally angels trying to bring about the apocalypse. How much more literal can I make this for you”. i see this sometimes even among people who consider writing or reading a personal hobby – see the “the curtains are just blue” tumblr post that circulates every once in a while (and gets on my nerves every time). i know some teachers treat symbolism like there’s right and wrong answers, i’ve experienced them, but i was able to comprehend the point of the exercise regardless. people hold this opinion about reading between the lines, then go online and show the most shit-tier reading comprehension imaginable. maybe some of them should’ve been paying attention in class, they’d be a lot less annoying to deal with. I can’t recall specific examples, but typically when my teachers pointed out symbolism, the class would react like they’d just seen a magic trick because it was so unmistakable. With no source but my own ass I’m going to guess that waaaay more teachers build lesson plans around the obviously purposeful symbolism in books like Gatsby, Scarlet Letter, Grapes of Wrath, or To Kill a Mockingbird, than fixate on offhand details like “tHe BluE cUrtAiNs.” If we’re being honest, there kind of is a right or at least set of rightish answers as to what the green light, the eyes, the broken clock, and etc mean in The Great Gatsby, and I was always asked to “interpret” stuff like that, meaning “Summarize the substantial textual evidence I’ve gone over all but proving that the themes of this book are X, Y, and Z.”

I’m not saying the I Have the Power Chord Shirt but in fact I love this infamous blue curtains mentioned once for no reason on page 53 never show up in any badly made tests or homework, but I think it’s overstated on reddit for sure. In most cases the symbolism was definitely there, and these whiny redditors didn’t see it because of a skill issue, myself included. That’s why it is taught. This right here. It’s like a brain exercise for your creativity. I fucking HATE that one comment about “the curtains are just blue” because it’s made people think that analyzing symbolism is pointless. It’s so harmful to people’s creativity. Even OP’s post shows that some authors had deeper meanings to their story choices, some didn’t. That wasn’t the point of the article at all. Though the subject felt “beyond his assignments” and “tired of symbol hunting” his teacher was involved with him on this little project and supported him through it, and he ended up a teacher himself. The point it seems is that nobody asked the author’s, not even the scholars. It’s more and interesting project engaged in by someone who asked a question and sought an answer. Oh, I know. I was commenting on the responses in this thread talking about how the entire exercise of analyzing literature from a meta point of view is stupid. I love what this kid did, and I’m sure the authors and the teacher did, too.
