Once injected, your body produces these spike proteins for a short period of time, because the mRNA is essentially a blueprint for the spike protein. The mRNA is unable to replicate, once consumed it is gone. Then, your body believes that it is infected with COVID, and creates beta lymphocytes that can kill that specific strain, and any others that have the same or similar spike proteins on the surface. This takes 3-5 days to happen. Your body continues producing these beta lymphocytes for several years.

The attenuated forms aren’t infective, but using them to vaccinate can have stronger side effects than the inactive vaccines. Especially in people who are immunocompromised.
