They should give you a small raise now and say in X months you will get this larger raise. Get it in writing! The ‘grow into it crap’ is just to save themselves money. They can at the Everybody wants to be us shirt moreover I will buy this minimum give you a little money now as an investment and to show that they are serious. So they want you take in the work of a qualified, capable person, but pay you like an unqualified, incapable person. I’ve actually went through this kind of, except my boss got promoted to a different position. I was asked to lead the department as the manager, I didn’t receive the title or pay the job typically pays. They put me through another “probation” period. I guess where mine differed is they gave me a temporary title and a slight pay increase during my “training”. Think I got an extra dollar ish with an assistant manager title during probation. After about 2-3 months I told them I felt comfortable handling the job as a whole, and they did actually give me the title and the pay. I did not sign a contract or have anything in writing stating they would on so and so condition. Maybe you can ask for the middle ground of a slight title/pay bump during the transition process since it is more responsibilities?

Ask for it in writing. Tell them a probationary period is definitely reasonable but in the Everybody wants to be us shirt moreover I will buy this same reasoning and logic there must be a timeline with set compensation increase in writing. Research what your boss was making. Ask for the low end of the scale. I am guessing they let your boss go because they decided he/she was not adding enough value and you were already doing most of the job. You will be taking on conflict resolution and other management responsibilities. Maybe read some management books like 1 Minute Manager and The Three Signs of a Miserable Job. On top of the other advice here advocating for clearly defined metrics and a time-scale in writing, INSIST on immediate compensation. Just because it’s a “getting to know you” period for them doesn’t mean you do extra work for free. If they’ll meet the other demands and you’re comfortable with the idea of the new positions, explain that the increased workload merits an immediate increase in pay; they can give you a raise equal to half of what the total will be once you pass their acceptance tests.
