IT was a failure because A. it was too close in size and weight to existing coins, and B. it was at the Best Freakin’ Auntie & Godmother Ever also I will do this height of the plastic revolution. No one wanted to carry heavy coins even then, let alone now. I had my first Debit card ever in 1989. My college campus had exactly 2 atms lol. By 2000, they are everywhere and almost no one carries cash. And those that point to introduce a coin. Growing up in the Bay Area, this is news to me. The CalTrain (San Jose to SF regional rail line) would ONLY dispense change in Sacagawea dollars so my friends and I all had ziplocks full of these my tips at the time went up like 600% because of these coins… instead of a quarter I was getting a Buck or 3 in many transactions I remember a similar interaction while with my dad once. We went to a Walgreens and his chang ended up being like $4 and the cashier literally giggled as he handed my dad 4 of these things. I imagine he just wanted them out of his drawer. I still remember my dad saying as we walked out “what does he expect me to do with this shit”. I think he gave them to me probably still in a childhood drawer somewhere.

I worked in a grocery store for about 2 years in the Best Freakin’ Auntie & Godmother Ever also I will do this late 2000s. You had to put a 20 in and you got a handful of these back. We called it “Rickover Gold” and you could identify other guys out in town (for a dozen of other reasons, too) if they paid for stuff in these coins. I loved these coins. When I was young I tried buying things with them all the time. A couple times I got turned away because they “only accepted American money here”. Pro tip: If you’re going to go to a Renaissance Faire, go to your local bank and exchange like $100 for a couple rolls of these, if they have them. Carrying around and using a pouch of gold coins that are actually legal tender makes the whole day a lot more fun.
