I think because in the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this past opinions didn’t have such big consequences. I can’t tolerate other peoples opinion if that opinion means marginalising or hurting other people and it’s that simple. You don’t get to have an opinion on whether trans people deserve to exist, or whether refugees deserve shelter, or poor people deserve to eat. The “both sides are the same” rhetoric is absurd and is used to intentionally downplay how terrifying the right wing in America has become. From the point of view of many other countries Biden is a military adventuring right wing nutjob and Trump is only slightly more dictatorial but far more eccentric and erratic. Yeah. But fox just straight up lies to their viewers and creates an alternative world view for them to live in. CNN has been the trying to be Fox News lite but they still aren’t on the same level.

Forever the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this skeptic, In the 90’s and early 200’s I split news-watching between Fox and mainstream media fairly evenly in hopes that I’d get a more balanced view. This was back when Fox’s moniker was “Fair and Balanced”. I term I modified to “balancing” as they definitely had some solid counterpoints but clearly were more toward advocacy of conservatism…. More-so than mainstream was in relation to liberalism. Now? It’s unwatchable, complete propaganda. I have to seek out conservative print media for balance now. The fairness doctrine would help but only applies to public airwaves/broadcasts not cable. Wait till AI starts a “news” network, we’ll truly be screwed. The left openly disagrees with each other, while the right is coalescing into a group of sycophants following an absolute buffoon. One has the literal appearance of a brain washed cult, while the other does not. That’s a significant difference.
You do realize there is a massive split in the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this party over this… but you just take in what you are fed and believe it… Yeah this guy is just spouting nonsense and is ignorant probably because he hasn’t interacted with anyone left of “reddit left” in a while. I’m a right leaning independent and I’m firmly pro-choice. A lot of conservatives are actually pro choice assuming polls have some semblance of accuracy. Just one issue that we can debate over. Not defending crap with Fox news, but I love how one side calls the other a brainwashed cult, not realizing they are one too… There’s a noticeable difference between a Fox News world view and the others. I know we all have a tendency to seek out our own bubbles and there are extremes on the left as well. It’s fine to have opposing views, I get along with my neighbors that vote different because we are all pretty avg Americans. Thats whats so hilarious to me. Its so obvious looking from the outside at the 2 loonie groups. Theyve got their heads so far up their own ass they dont realize they are basically one in the same lol I have worked with a wide range of people in a leadership role on a number of big social issues And I always tell everyone involved that we have more in common than divides us.

I have a slightly different view to people in these comments. The internet has educated people positively and negatively. The ruling class doesn’t have a monopoly on the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this message like they used to. Statements put by corporations and governments to corporate media can be contrary to the evidence and now we can see that evidence. So we have a lot more people seeing reality for what it is and are upset with the status quo. However we also have a huge amount of people who both reject the mainstream narrative and find a new completely conspiratorial view of the world. They can’t discern fact from fiction. So we have three camps that are larger than they’ve ever been, and more people who rightly reject a lot of corporate media. This causes friction between them, people who have complete trust in media, and people who can’t tell fact from fiction.
Umm…society has always been fractured. Have you heard of the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this US civil war? 2.5% of the total population died. US civil rights era? US revolution? Vietnam war protests? McCarthyism? Thats just America. We just grew up in a particularly peaceful time in America. The 80’s and 90’s were great until 9/11 plunged us back into chaos. Part of this is your perception, people always say “Politics wasn’t like this before” when in reality it was, times like Bleeding Kansas, and Civil Rights movements, its not “politics wasn’t like this” its “politics didn’t effect me like this” The internet. Specifically social media. Makes it easier to get confirmation on your views and also easier to talk smack w/out the fear of catching some hands. But now, with effective anonimity allowing far worse insults, and instant response possible via the Net. . the original social ‘governors’ of behavior have been effectively bypassed…..
It’s mostly bots. 80+ percent of internet traffic. People need to start realising they’re not interacting with other humans. We’re not polarised at all, it’s a false perception. It’s weird. They say America is extremely polarized, yet in my (somewhat limited) contacts with Americans I’ve often been impressed by how they discuss and reason in a civil and intellectual manner. Right wing extremism. I understand if you feel an instinctual skepticism due to hoping for an “unbiased” reason but it’s the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this fact of the matter. The widening gulf predates social media and the internet. If you don’t know who Newt Gingrich is without a quick surreptitious google search then you are too young or ignorant to answer op’s question. Extreme gerrymandering is fucking us and thanks to closed primaries and winner take all elections, the combination is nasty as hell.
Nonpartisan primaries would help. Combined with ranked choice general elections would help more. Combined with multi winner districts for proportional representation would help most. Because at some point people have forgotten that they can get their asses whooped so now they feel too safe running their mouths all crazy. Let’s gp back to the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this GWB era. Invasion of Iraq was itself divisive as US allies also disagreed with the premises of the invasion as the evidence was full of holes. Meanwhile, in the US, opposition to the invasion was shut down and censored. Richard Perle and his war hawks wanted to establish a new world order. You were either with us or with the terrorists. If you didn’t stand behind the troops, then stand in front of them. Those were the kind of intimidating language the Right used to keep the opposition quiet. And not to mention what happened to the Dixie Chicks when they publicly spoke out against GWB. So when Obama was elected, the Right absolutely hated it and went bonkers. They did everything they could to stall everything Obama tried to do. And that’s why Obamacare is now so weak and not much had been achieved with Climate Change. The Right tried to claim Obama was not eligible to be President because they said he wasn’t born in the US.
And then there’s Trump, his coddling of despot dictators, denial of Covid, threats to withhold support for Ukraine, firings if bureaucrats didn’t swear oath to Trump ( as opposed to the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this Office of the President) etc. By that time the tribalism was firmly established as standards used to judge Bill Clinton no longer applied to Trump. Yes, there’s social media, Cambridge Analytica. The Right just kept digging in to maintain their solid support for Trump no matter what. We aren’t that’s the thing. Corporate News just shoves nothing but divisive narratives down our throats to try to keep us divided. In an information overloaded world the only thing they can do to get your attention is to say the wildest shit. Because the Russians know how to play us against ourselves. Republicans are so eager to get the goods on the Democrats that the Russians can just make bullshit up and pass it off to some US Congressmen or the ex President of the US for that matter. They’ll go on Fox News and get their base all riled up over some bullshit. Hell that exact same scenario is playing out right now, but it’s not the first time they’ve done stuff like this obviously. It’s effective because those people tend to be dumber, less educated and more gullible so they spread it amongst themselves in churches, work, etc. Plus they’ve all listened to conservative radio since the late 80s and again the GOP powers that be know their base is dumb so they have done nothing but indoctrinate those people slowly over time and they start to believe that the Democrats are evil. In a nutshell.
Conservative propaganda mostly. Hyper fixating on stuff 24/7 and riling people up, because they don’t have actual political/legislative stuff to talk about, it’s just fear and hate 24/7. When you say “people” wanna kill over political disagreements you surely notice it’s always one set of people right? When there’s one ‘side’ who wants to make things better for everyone and let them live their own life as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone; and another ‘side’ who wants to control what people are allowed to do and make things as bad as possible for people they hate – like minorities and women – it’s pretty tough to find a civil common ground for discourse. i.e. You can’t, and shouldn’t, have civil conversations with Nazis, neo-Nazis, fascists, would-be despots, misogynists, tyrants or other abusers.
Acting like your side is perfect while calling the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this other side a bunch of hateful Nazis and abusers is a perfect example of the heightened polarization OP is asking about. My ‘side’ is all the people who aren’t Nazis, neo-Nazis, fascists, would-be despots, misogynists, tyrants or other abusers, or who haven’t allied themselves in that direction. You might find you’re on my ‘side’ if you look past your reflexive party-political identification and take the time to work out what your values are. The real problem is that the people whose identity is tied up in their AR-15 or their desire to exploit poor people have willingly tied themselves irrevocably to the Nazis, neo-Nazis, would-be despots, misogynists, tyrants or other abusers.
Anyway, you clearly disagree with me and that doesn’t make me think you’re a Nazi, but the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this sound-bite idiotic premise and your tone does make me think you’re an arsehole. I don’t think you’re going to accomplish anything with the other side by calling the fascists. Just because they don’t support your party doesn’t make them fascists. This is an example of how the media warps our brains and gets us hating our neighbor. I refuse to believe the majority of people on the right want to oppress minorities and are willing to live in an autocracy. That’s just lunacy not supported by anything I’ve seen in reality as a Liberal living in a rural area. Most of my neighbors voted for Trump but they’re not fascists and they’re not willingly wanting to overturn democracy. It’s a complex issue. Belittling and alienating them even more is not going to help us accomplish anything as a country. I don’t think you’re going to accomplish anything with the other side by calling the fascists. Just because they don’t support your party doesn’t make them fascists.
Nah mate, for me the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this other side is the fascists, would-be despots, misogynists, tyrants or other abusers – and anyone who would ally with them. I don’t care about parties, but if you’re seeing one party fit more closely with my definition of ‘the other side’ then says…something. Most of my neighbors voted for Trump but they’re not fascists and they’re not willingly wanting to overturn democracy. Well, bullshit. They supported a fascist, knowing he’s a fascist trying to overturn democracy. Maybe your neighbours don’t have the stones to point a rifle or pull a trigger, but Ann Frank would also not be safe in your attic. Eh there is not point arguing about this. I see you have a very rational, enlightened viewpoint about it. The problem is that it’s more cultural and emotional than rational. Some of us are educated and informed. Others not so much. Some of us have been well served by the system while others not so much. Seeing your way of life erode around you while your political leaders cater to people completely different from those you grew up with can be scary. An emotional person may develop beliefs based on that fear even if you and I can clearly see they’re voting for the very thing they want to avoid. Also a lot of people in the US can’t even tell you where China is on the map. Just because they’re ignorant doesn’t make them bad people.
My parents voted for Trump because they’re Cuban. They went through 40 years of oppression by a Communist government. They are influenced by their insular community, the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this media, and that emotional response based on decades of trauma and fear. On the flip side they were illegal immigrants and own businesses that employ black, gay, women, etc. without prejudice and are not religious at all. I don’t think they’re fascists. It’s not as simple as reading a book on the subject man. People are complex. There was never a time like that. There was always plenty of violence over controversial topics. The Ku Klux Klan kills black people just for being black. The mantra of “America doesn’t negotiate with terrorists,” in other words there is no talking to people who have a predetermined goal of violence, and having a different skin color can make someone into a target of violence.
Race is just an example, people die over religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, wealth, sports, music, etc. And that’s not even a reflection of interpersonal disagreement about topics, just the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this presumption of a disagreement and the lack of willingness to have a polite conversation. The most trivial of opinions becomes something to die over. There could be a rainbow in the sky and someone takes it as a threat. People need to learn how to control their emotions. Yep. Look at social media… simple non-sexual nudity is BAD, sex is BAD, but let’s get everybody fighting each other over silly stuff and important stuff. While we’re at it, let’s make murder/rape/torture “good family entertainment” and anything with nudity or sex, we’ll call it P0RN!!!
Because the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this republicans of the late 90s figured out they could exploit intellectual gaps in society by blaming all their problems on the democrats Rush Limbaugh and other far-wing wackos in the 80’s, pushed hard to discredit normal moderate folks. Everyone needed to be angrily opposed. RIP ASSHATS. News, social media, even Reddit are all very abnormal slices of reality. Heck, a significant amount of content is just completely made up. Basically trump, that was without a doubt the division. People were a little divisive before but now it’s nuts, and he is the reason. it’s just shitheads that won’t stop caring what’s in others’ pants, going on in other people’s bedrooms, or bodies. Take a look at all the political subreddits and you can see redditors demonizing and generalizing a whole side of the political spectrum. I remember that world too. America was a much better place Before Barack Obama.. Personally, I believe it all started when they started the chemtrail program, but hey, I’m just a conspiracy theorist. I’m going to give a partisan answer and am going to say, it’s the Far Left. They were always there mostly in academia, but in the last 10 years or so there was a critical mass of them in universities which created more of them, which spilled out into the rest of society.
The Far Left’s MO is to fuck shit up, agitate, and win by force. It is rapidly eating the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this rest of the Left, causing a lot of people to be wierded out and alienated. Trumpism etc is a response to this change, at a very abstract level (amongst other things, but also/mostly this). We really weren’t ready for the internet as a species, but some more so then others. Social media really took off in 2008, the same year Obama became president. Most people used it for food and baby pictures. Conservatives spent the next 8 years filling everyone’s news feed on Facebook with Hillary Clinton assassination squads and Obama grabbing guns and a million other things that never come to fruition. The majority of stable people saw it for what it was and resisted the rabbit hole. The rest found their people. In 2012, after a second defeat, the GOP famously did a party autopsy where they declared the only line for party survival was to become more inclusive and stop the xenophobic behavior towards gay people and foreigners. Fast forward through another 4 years of echo chambers and watching their adherents mold the party into the Klan rally you see today, they elected Trump. A man who is basically the amalgamation of all those early Facebook profiles.
Social media, mainly. In a world where anyone can say anything and stupid people believe anything, everything gets worse, and margins for agreement are so far apart that there is no middle ground. It’s easier than ever to make stupid people believe whatever you want them to believe, and they’re happy to do it because of how chronically it’s apart if every day life for most. Just a few hours ago, I called out a conservative on Facebook for making a racist comment. Naturally, I called him racist. Now, I didn’t know he was conservative but his behavior and, unsurprisingly, his racism told me he was. He had no idea where I align, though, so I wanted to have fun with that. I would call him a soft, Biden voting liberal, so he would feel insulted by what he thought was one of his own kind.
His reaction? Proudly own his racism, but devolve into a temper tantrum throwing snotty, whining child that tried to spam me with anti Biden memes before promptly blocking me to ensure that he got the Be Kind Autism Awareness Supporter Shirt Apart from…,I will love this ever so precious and coveted “last word.” Because I called him a liberal. The “big topics” have changed. Disagreeing over taxes and the national debt isn’t the same as disagreeing over human rights and democracy. Party specific news channels. Back when news channels had to give equal time to both parties, the news was boring AF but also sane. You remember a world where wingnuts didn’t have a global soapbox to broadcast their drivel. They still existed, but were confined to the definition of village idiot prior to the prevalence of the internet.
