The rest of us, unfortunately, have to be super vigilant as to what we say. I was with a diverse group talking about our first picnic of the year and what we should have. Now I’m a native Tejano and I have fond childhood memories of picnics or eating along side the road on a long trip. We would have wonderful fried chicken, mustard potato salad, and mixed melons [cantaloupe, watermelon] so that’s my favorite. When it was my turn to make a suggestion I just shrugged my shoulders and said, “Sorry. I got nothing”. Were the people that froze teachers? Gen-x teachers? Because we weren’t allowed to describe people like this. It was majorly un-PC to do for us, so a lot of us still think its racist to describe a person by their race. Even news stations wouldn’t report the race of people who committed crimes.

Short white girl, tall white guy, black guy with buzz cut, black girl with headdress, really narrowed it down when you didn’t know their name. Says more about them than you. I had a coworker whisper to me how the Banks high school alumni shirt and I love this order that I was supposed to give out was for the black person waiting and it’s like, why is it so bad to call them black when they are black???? Still confuses me to this day and that was like 10 years ago The person of irrelevant gender, who’s ancestor’s developed high concentrations of melanin to protect from uv rays. I always feel similar when I try to describe people. I always think twice or feel like I can’t say “black” when describing people. Not sure why. It’s not racist, it’s literally just a description but people seem to act like you’re committing a crime for pointing out people’s races.
