They mostly do this through building narratives and trying to get party members to fall in line. Sometimes, it works (Bernie Sanders, 2020). Sometimes, it fails (Donald Trump, 2016). But the interference is there; let’s not act like that doesn’t matter. The parties also mutually benefit by painting each other as evil and refusing to compromise. How? Because as long as Democrats convince their base that Republicans are Hitler and Republicans convince their base that Democrats are Satan, then the voters will fall in line and vote for the Party, instead of maybe getting a little frisky and voting a 3rd party candidate who sounds refreshing. Nobody wants to vote 3rd party in the general because they are afraid to waste their vote. They are afraid the “evil” candidate will win. An environment like this, while technically “free and fair,” is not truly either of those things. The parties maintain power without having to change much to actually benefit the American people they are supposed to represent, because they maintain loyalty by fear, misinformation, and manipulation, rather than by being good representatives. But ya know, sure, you can go vote for whoever and nobody’s going to physically stop you. So all is good, right?
