I’m an hourglass – waist 10 inches smaller than hips, BUT my hips aren’t my widest part. An inch or two lower is my widest part (about 2 inches wider than my hips). I was going to suggest going up a size to accommodate your actual widest measurement (which sounds like it is low hip rather than true hip), but if you’re happy to forego the pocket, just have the pocket removed! But you could also try a size up in the dressing room, just to see how it looks. If the pocket is pulling open, there might be some other fit issues too that could be fixed by just going up a size. When I measure clients for custom garments, I am less worried about the exact measurement of their true hip than I am with the measurement of the widest part of the hip, which could be true, low, or high. For some people, the upper thigh is bigger than any part of their hips. This is all information that impacts fit & that I would take into consideration when developing a custom garment, & that a layperson can take into consideration when buying off-the-rack, especially if they’re willing to hire out some alterations. Too big is always easier to fix than too small!
