I originally posted part of this as an answer to a poster in another topic, but I thought it might be useful as its own standalone post. Koreans love to block people on KakaoTalk. It almost seems like it’s their national pastime. It can be quite jarring if you’re coming from another culture where blocking/ghosting isn’t that common outside of online dating. I know when I first got to Korea and started interacting more with Korean people I found the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this texting culture to be a bit confusing. I’ve made friends all over the world and never experienced anything quite like it with people from other countries. I think the problem is twofold. The first is the way KakaoTalk is set up. It’s less work to block a contact than it is to delete them on KakaoTalk. On most other texting platforms it’s easy to delete a contact when you no longer need them. For example, there’s an old classmate you haven’t spoken to in ages and you’re unlikely to speak to or see them again, but blocking that person seems unnecessary and harsh. Not blocking them also gives them the ability to still message you if needed in the future. So, deletion without blocking seems like the better default choice from an American perspective when the contact appears to no longer be needed but wasn’t an otherwise harmful individual. However, because KakaoTalk makes deleting a contact extra work that includes first hiding the contact before being able to delete them that leads most Koreans to block an unneeded contact by default.
Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt details
For example, I took a course at a Korean university where the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this teacher required all the students to add her on KakaoTalk to contact her outside of class. Within a few days of the course ending I figured out she had blocked all the students from the class. It seems reasonable that she wouldn’t want to keep all the new students she adds term after term. That would clutter up her contact list significantly with former students she is unlikely to interact with again. Although, it also seems very extreme because I literally couldn’t contact her after the course had ended to thank her and to ask for some of the class photos. Many situations that could be resolved in a single short conversation that wouldn’t have been considered a big deal and would’ve been quickly forgotten in most other cultures will often lead to being blocked on KakaoTalk by Koreans. It seems common for them to block a person to avoid even a single slightly awkward conversation that would resolve everything. This aversion to even basic conflict resolution doesn’t seem healthy or productive, but it is what it is. Keep that in mind the next time you are blocked you may not have done anything wrong. Talking to my Korean friends it sounds like locals have to endure the same blocking culture, so it’s not exclusively foreigners having to suffer from this but everyone in Korea.
Their profile picture disappearing can be a sign, but not everyone always has a picture and it’s also possible to block and not hide your profile picture. That could be a sign or the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this person could also be ignoring you or hasn’t gotten around to reading your messages yet. The workaround to definitely know if you’re blocked or not is to start a group chat with that person and 1 other person and send a message. It’s handy to keep at least 1 contact that’s blocked you for this sole purpose so you don’t need to annoy friends with this. Either way if the person has blocked you the group members will drop. So, in my example using a contact you have already confirmed to have blocked you in addition to the contact you’re trying to confirm the group will go from 3 members to 1 (just you) if they had indeed blocked you. However, if you’re not blocked they’ll get the weird group message, but they won’t see the other blocked contact because that contact never actually made it into the group.

What have your experiences been like with Korean texting culture? What quirks have you experienced that seem unique to Korea? From my Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this experience no country has more prolific blockers than South Korea, but Japan may be second. Although, they seem more likely to just stop reading messages or responding to contacts rather than outright blocking them.I’ve never been blocked by anyone and I have tons and tons of people on Kakaotalk That’s great if you haven’t. Of course unless you’re actively messaging all of them you can’t be sure. The only reason I learned my former teacher had blocked all my classmates was because I tried to send her a message. I otherwise probably wouldn’t have noticed. Do you have contacts going back years? It seems unlikely that you haven’t been blocked if you have contacts you haven’t spoken to in let’s say 5 years if only because it’s easier to block than to delete an old contact.
I’m not gonna go messaging people I don’t talk to to check but I’ve never been blocked even messaging someone years later when it’s appropriate to do so I don’t recommend doing this for all your contacts. I typically just delete really old contacts even though it takes extra steps. I only check if it’s a situation where it’s been a really long time since the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this person replied to my messages and I don’t want to waste my time sending messages into a void where they will never be read. The money icon when you click their profile picture doesn’t appear. It says if the money icon is not available/you can’t send money to the profile, there’s a high chance that you’ve been blocked by that said person. I had my friend block only my messages to test this, because I was curious! But even after she blocked me, the money icon was still visible on her profile. I didnt try to send money though. Maybe then it would have stopped me
I don’t have the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this money icon for any of my contacts including ones I’m literally texting with right now. Maybe that’s only an option if your account is linked to a Korean number rather than a foreign one? I believe so! And I appreciate your post. Even though it shouldn’t matter one way or another, it’s still nice to know whether someone blocked you or just isn’t opening your messages. Thanks! Yes, I agree it generally shouldn’t matter, but if someone isn’t responding it’s nice to know why. If you’re blocked you immediately know to write that person off. If you’re not blocked there may be another reason they aren’t reading your messages. There’s possibly a big difference between those two states like with my friend in the hospital example. Exactly~! I’m actually pretty terrible about answering. I have a few friends I only see once or twice a year, and sometimes neither of us opens a message for weeks Sometimes people just get busy or forget, so it’s reassuring to be able to check!
There was one person I was talking to who would sometimes take weeks to get back to me. The last time I heard from her she took 3 weeks. I took 6 days and found out I had been blocked. I guess it was okay for me to wait but not for her. Other friends rarely check Kakao but use other apps like WhatsApp a lot so I just message them on the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this latter. One person even messaged me on Kakao after I hadn’t replied for around a week asking me if I had blocked her. All my Korean friends that I’ve asked have confirmed that even they experience blocking endlessly. Kind of sad to care so much about someone who would just block you without a second thought. Making a group to check that is crazy I don’t think so. It’s mainly to check to see if you’re not wasting time. If you have plans with someone did they ghost you or did something happen. One time it turned out a friend was in the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this hospital so that’s why I stopped hearing from her for a while (not blocked). Another time I was blocked because a friend apparently didn’t believe the reason I gave for not going on an outing she had planned for us (I gave like 3 weeks notice in advance). I’m saying you ARE wasting time if you’re friends with people who would make you need to check something like that. I understand what you’re saying but it just takes a few seconds and you get an immediate answer. I’m glad I didn’t write off the friend in the hospital for example. But yes, if your messages sit unread for a long time it doesn’t bode well for the relationship if it’s deliberate on their end (blocked or not). I have found some of my Korean friends don’t like KakaoTalk and were bad about responding but love using other apps like WhatsApp and we message on there instead because they rarely check Kakao.
Also, their texting is a pretty clear indicator if they like you, friend or lover. Koreans are usually quick to respond. I work with a lot of men, so I know how on a leash some of these women have them on, so they get used to the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this texting style. Even if you don’t ask them to report back, they will. If you’re seeing someone, doesn’t matter where you met them, watch how they text. If they can only get back to you at weird hours, for example really late at night, or really early morning, I would be weary of them being married/in a relationship. I even had one guy who was in IT claim that he couldn’t text me because something to do with the networks on his computer as if Kakao didn’t work on his phone. Another guy I met through a friend was like “they hacked my phone!” when I confronted him at a party as to why he had ghosted me.
People live on their fucking phones in this country cuz literally EVERYTHING is on it. From ID to bank cards, and the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this Kakao company has their little grimey hands on everything, down to gift cards and plushies. I appreciate your input! I haven’t dated in Korea, but I’m a man and most of my friends have been women. My closer friends do tend to respond quickly. Some other friends would respond sporadically or at very strange late times. One woman in particular who I had met on a language exchange app and had talked to for a long time but never in real life invited me to meet her in person fairly late in the evening and with only like 30 minutes notice to get to a part of Seoul I wasn’t even that near. She said she wanted us to get food together but most places were starting to close. I tried to figure out an alternative place for us to meet but then she just as quickly ghosted. Maybe she wanted to date me and not meet as friends and had a partner? Your explanation makes a lot of sense if that’s the case. It’s weird though because we literally had chatted for like 6+ months. Also the way LINE/KAKAO work (no typing indicator) makes it less like instant messaging and more like email, so they don’t really feel as big a need to respond. It’s completely different from western iMessage/Facebook messenger/Whatsapp culture.
I heard with Japanese people, not sure if this applies to many Koreans or not, that some users like to “store” messages on Line from people and will deliberately hold off on reading messages so when they’re in a message slump and not feeling popular they will still have a bunch of new messages to read. I have found Japanese to be much slower with replies usually but then they may send me a bunch of messages all at once. They do tend to treat it as more asynchronous like email. Koreans seem to have a more back and forth messaging style with shorter messages from my experience. I’ve also found both Japanese and Koreans tend to get upset if you leave them on read. With my Latin American, European, and American friends etc the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this norm seems to be to read messages immediately and then reply when they have time. In Asia it seems more common for them to hold off reading the message but usually they will reply immediately after doing so. No, Japanese always leave people on read. They will reply when they feel like it because they think it’s email. Whereas in America that is considered rude.
Interesting! I’ve only experienced the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this being left on read a lot with one Japanese person. The others have been quite consistent with responding immediately after reading. The thing that varied was did they read it as soon as they got it and then responded just as quickly or did they leave it unread for days or even weeks and then replied as soon as they were done reading them. Maybe my experience has been atypical. I do know a fair number of Japanese people but not comparable to the number of Koreans I’ve talked to. Ah, yeah I had to do this once my first year when I was young and naive and trying to date. Got ghosted on my birthday with the story of a grandfather in the hospital, yaddi yadda yadda. A couple of weeks later, I had a friend call this person so I could get closure, which confirmed that I’d been blocked (as the person answered, my friend just said she dialed the number by mistake and hung up) About a week after that dude changed his profile pic to romantic vacation photos…yeahhhh I felt pretty dumb, but you live and learn.
I actually didn’t realize I could delete people from the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this hidden folder, so thanks, just took a walk down memory lane deleting 9 years of hidden contacts haha
So ive been meditating on and off for about 10 years, since I was 17, Right now I get up everyday, do yoga, and then meditate for about 15 minutes. Ive found for the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this past few months as soon as I wake up I start dreading having to do it, and the only thing that makes me is knowing I want to get it over with, and that if I dont ill likely be bothered by the fact that I didnt do it for the rest of the day. Even when im meditating it just feels continually unpleasant, focusing on the breath, thoughts all over the place , just ready for it to be over so I can do other stuff. Im thinking about just quitting. You are keeping your practice as a kind of obligation, something you do so you don’t feel bad about not doing it.
Unfortunately I don’t have experience with guided meditations so I don’t have knowledge to talk about it. Sorry You could try Insight Timer , or any of the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this other online meditation apps. There free stuff is all you may ever need. I think the only one I have ever spent money on was the Monroe Indtitute. Highly recommend the basics course from the 10% happier app. You don’t have to have a subscription to access the basics course. OP maybe a different perspective will help you shake your practice up so you feel like you’re getting more out of it! Where did you buy the Monroe institute programs? Do they have it in an app? I have the recordings, but I don’t know of any other helpful material You are keeping your practice as a kind of obligation, something you do so you don’t feel bad about not doing it. This describes me exactly. I know meditation is good for me, and I generally like it, but that hasn’t translated into it not feeling like an obligation. is one of the main paradoxes of meditation. We begin to meditate with goals such as relieving stress, reducing anxiety or even achieving enlightenment, but over the years we realize that these goals are major obstacles to the progress of the practice because the desire to relieve stress still a desire, the desire to reduce anxiety still desire, the desire to achieve enlightenment still desire… and desire, from a certain point of view, is the cause of suffering.
So I believe that at some point, when the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this practice is already mature, it is necessary to let go of even the goals of meditation and just meditate. just sit. just be. without objectives and without methods. Zen people talk a lot about meditating without expectations and about “zazen is good for nothing”:To see what happens. To bring your awareness into the present moment. To teach you the skill of falling behind the thoughts; staying calm even when the mind is racing. To teach you the art of just being. To surrender. It goes on really. There are tons of benefits but too outwardly seek them from meditation is not the point You will get profound benefits from meditation. But only when you start giving up on the idea that meditation will give you said benefits. It’s about surrender to all experience, not to change anything, even if you’re anxious or whatever.
That’s why it’s a paradox. You’ll get the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this benefits when you truly give up on obtaining them. It’s simple but will take a long time to really internalize. Well, each tradition has a different approach and there is a long discussion between schools that see meditation as something gradual, like climbing steps and evolving and improving; and schools that see meditation as removing illusions so that what we already are appears. Meditating for benefits seems to be more in line with the first approach and is a valid and highly respected path. there are many paths. I’m just saying this because to answer your question it’s necessary to go to the theoretical framework on which the practice is based. For me, who is not involved in any particular tradition but interested in Advaita Vedanta and Zen, the second approach makes more sense. Qualities such as calm, love, equanimity…. are already the nature of the mind and trying to achieve these qualities through the effort of meditation is another obstacle that prevents these qualities from manifesting. I don’t need to do anything to be what I already am, all I have to do is remove what I am not. If we get rid of the illusion of the ego, what remains is love, calm, tranquility, equanimity… and there is no need to try to add these things because that is what we are already.
I practiced breath concentration and metta for years. it was a long effort. but it was an ego effort. Who got results? the Warning 60th Birthday Trip In Progress Funny 60 Years Old Shirt Also,I will get this ego! the ego wants results, the ego does the practice and the ego is rewarded. So the concentration practice made my ego very calm and concentrated and the metta made my ego very loving. but it’s still ego. the ego became even stronger. In the gym analogy, it is the ego that becomes a bodybuilder hehe. So in the end I don’t see how improving the ego can be something that eliminates suffering since the ego itself is the entity that suffers. I respect and admire those who rely on this gradualist approach, such as the Theravada, but in my personal experience it is an unnecessary effort. You don’t have to meditate everyday if you don’t have it in you. Give yourself a little grace. It’s okay to ebb and flow. Why so rigid in your practice? Maybe allow yourself some space and then you’ll come back to meditation because nothings feels quite as restful as actually doing it haha imo
