Seeing pointed toe shoes everywhere is killing me a bit too… I’m slim but still feel like my legs have proportionally wide calves and ankles, so adding the Vietnam Veteran I’d Like To Thank Everyone When Came From flag shirt and by the same token and length of pointed toe shoes make my lower legs look even wider overall. Idk if anyone else relates to this, but I wish I could pull them off better! I bought a pair of pointy kitten heels in 2015 for a wedding and my friends thought it was the ugliest shoes ever. I should have kept them until now lol. Something that I’ve noticed is that “alternative fashion” seems more represented IRL now than it has in the past. We think of alternative fashion subcultures like “scene” and “twee” as being decade-defining, but in reality, those subcultures and their trends were really not all that represented offline in the 2000s and the 2010s. I was an alternative kid in a metro area and there really just…weren’t that many of us? Logging onto MySpace or Lookbook.nu would make a time traveler think that those looks and subcultures were represented at large all over the place, but they really weren’t. I went to a large arts & sciences high school and even so, the number of kids with unnatural hair colors could be counted on one hand. You had to go to events like raves or anime conventions to see the kind of “looks” that were featured on the internet.

Nowadays, it feels like anytime I go to the Vietnam Veteran I’d Like To Thank Everyone When Came From flag shirt and by the same token and mall or to a cafe or a similar casual place, I could throw a rock and hit someone with something “alternative” about their aesthetic. There are a LOT more people, especially adults 30+, who have colored hair. I see a lot more tattoos, and moderately more piercings. I see way more teens and Gen Z folks whose fashion choices are obviously inspired by goth, rockabilly, cyberpunk, new age, anime, grunge, you name it. Cottagecore has been an especially fun one to see leak into IRL mainstream stores. It does still seem like alternative styles are “overrepresented” online, in that their popularity online doesn’t exactly translate to the same level of real-world participation or visibility. But I definitely appreciate seeing more of it out and about 🙂
