Oh yes, I didn‘t think of that. A Turkish friend of mine was named „Duhan“, but was mockingly called „Du Huan“ in school. Needless to say, he changed his name later in life. I had a Turkish girl in my class named Bahar. Kids would tease her and call her BH (bra). Also knew of a guy named Omar, which sounds exactly like Oma in German. What’s wrong with Holunder/Elderberry and Tom Tom? Tom Tom is a brand name, they sell GPS navigation systems for cars. There was also a case, where someone wanted to name a girl Pepsi. That was rejected, too. Holunder was either rejected because it’s unclear if it’s a male or female name, or because it’s a word from everyday language not known to be a first name. No everyday language, no fathers or mothers names (e. g. Stoitsov), no family names (Wagner, Müller etc.), no city names, no noble names, no military names (e.g. Shogun), no confusion between male and female names, no unusual spelling (you can name your kid Tyler, but you can’t germanize it like Theiler). Oh ok those rules are much stronger than the French ones (I think anything is fine unless the officer that registers the name thinks the name will be detrimental to the kid). I know in Denmark there is a list of specific approved names but I think it’s pretty easy to get something added there – or at least the difficult part is not convincing someone that the name is ok. And I must say I completely forgot about the Tom Tom GPS’s. In France (at least, probably exists in other languages too) there is a children comic book series named “Tom Tom et Nana” about two siblings – a boy named Tom Tom and a girl, Nana – so to me it just sounded like a name.

So many “but Tom Tom said” Surprised that the gender enforcement on names is still a thing. Even if not living in the cultural moment we are, I can think of tons of gender-neutral names in English. Why are they worried about masc vs fem in names? I believe this was recently changed but the rule used to be that neutral names are okay but you need at least one non-neutral name. So Alex Robert is okay, but Alex Robin or just Alex is not. Whisky has to be the name of some redneck somewhere. I knew a kid whose middle name was Bourbon but I suppose it could have been the French name even though it definitely wasn’t the kid only knew how to hunt fish and otherwise perform redneckery
