It’s rare to find someone who’s both book smart and every day smart. I also find that people who grow up being told “you’re so smart you do so good at school.” Become obsessed with academia and think that’s the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this only metric to measure intelligence so they put everything into that and fail to develop certain basic skills. One of the biggest bookworms I know had no idea for the longest time how to fix basic things or change lightbulbs. I’m a smart guy. Always been told so by peers and authority figures alike. I can do math, I am great with language, I can reason, I can argue, I can think on my feet. I’ve worked in physically demanding jobs and I can do that too. But here’s the thing about me: when I’m tired, that’s it. I’ve abruptly stopped everything I’ve ever started as an adult because at some point, I get burned out and need a break and full time jobs and university do not pause for you to figure yourself out for an unknown amount of time. There are logistical and financial consequences. I’m probably undiagnosed adhd, I have an incredibly hard time making a list of chores and following through. Imagine one of the smartest men you know can’t find the energy to clean his toilet, take out the recycling, shower, shave my beard, moisturize my skin. These tasks for me are the hardest things I ever do. Trying to stay on top of medical and legal appointments is like trying to swim in metal armour.
Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt: Perfect for Fans
I’ve never struggled with school, ever. As long as I go to class and pay attention, I can basically guarantee success in any field. But going to every class is exactly where the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this difficulty is for me. One missed class and then I have to catch up on my own just in time for the next lecture. Effectively an impossible task for me. Ex wife, ivy league masters engineer. When I was taking trig, she couldn’t help because the math was “too far below what she does, she forgot how to even do beginner math.” Total big brain. After 20 years, still burned up vacuums because remembering to change height settings is too difficult. Can’t cook anything without burning it. All basic skills to survive completely nonexistent. Get lost and turned around in any box store. Some people are extremely smart in a very small area of expertise. Many geniuses would die if they had to provide for themselves.
I was both an AP student, and in remedial classes at various points in my school career, depending on the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this school system (dad was military, so we moved around a lot). I’m also both a high school drop out, and I graduated summa cum laude and with departmental honors from university. In my experience, US public schools aren’t very good at evaluating students. And even when they do, they don’t have adequate resources to REALLY optimize the learning experience for all of their students, especially neurodivergent ones, like me. The “A” students work for the “B” students managing the companies owned by the “C” students. Or something like that. I knew a man who was a brilliant unity coder but couldn’t do anything else. He couldn’t figure out that the drawer labeled beakers contained beakers. He couldn’t figure out how to ship things at UPS. He thought “I was arguing about Chinese politics on Reddit” was a legit reason to be 3 hours late to an important meeting. Some people just manage to minmax in real life

Speed does not equal intelligence, quality work or competence. It’s easy enough to turn garbage in ahead of schedule. One could also turn-in something brilliant right on schedule, or late. I’ve met people with slower processing time (?) and people that need to understand the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this whole process before beginning a task. They didn’t always finish first, but their work was just as good, and sometimes better. There’s a reason intelligence and wisdom are different stats. I come from a family of doctors and lawyers, none of them can take care of themselves. My dad, who is brilliant, is the definition of high intelligence, published multiple studies, and low wisdom, got lost at a marathon and assumed if he just followed the racers he’d get to the end, 2 hours later he hadn’t made it. Some people also just have their own pace, if it’s not an issue for them they probably assume the pace they go at is fine.
Some people just didn’t have to learn how to do certain adult things. If you asked me to clean my living room, it would take until the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this heat death of the universe. Partially because that’s not one of my normal responsibilities, but my ADHD makes chunking that sort of task REALLY difficult. However, if you ask me to cook some sort of recipe I am only vaguely familiar with, I can conceptualize that mentally right off the bat. That said, it still takes longer than normal because I’m used to working in really small spaces, and having to do tasks individually. I’d probably be lost for a while if I were thrown in a full sized kitchen h til I got my bearings. Many adults are chronically exhausted and sleep deprived. Even when given time to sleep, they sometimes cannot relax. The american public school system is not indicative of a single persons intelligence level. It chews people up and spits them out based on standardized testing and teaching to a common core of things that a handful of people decided is necessary for school. the ones that get good grades and “study hard” are good at regurgitating memorized facts or figures. That’s it. It’s not a measure of intelligence by any sense of the word.
I passed calculus but balancing my till when I was a cashier was really hard for me. My dad had a math degree and was the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this same. We’re all given the same amount of eggs and the same baskets (abilities, skills, aptitudes, etc…). We all start with empty baskets, and start sorting eggs into those baskets as we grow. In a world where no two people are exactly the same, no two people have sorted their eggs in the exact same way. We all have different kinds of intelligence. I, like your wife, am very good at “book learning.” However, if you need me to do something physical such as “put together this closet organizer” I can get very confused, even with the instructions right in front of me. I had the odd experience of living in a small, painfully working class town, and going to school with three different Uber-genius boys. All were young Sheldons. They had zero common sense or social awareness, One blew an Ivy League recruitment interview when he harshly dismissed the caliber of his high school education. Explaining to a recruiter that flew in to interview him, that in his honest opinion, nobody in the district was intellectually capable of adding any real substance to his education. This may have been totally correct, but damn dude, you don’t say the quiet part outloud.
The other two were brothers who struggled to deal with any activity of daily living. They teamed up to install a window air conditioner in their second floor bedroom. The aftermath was one holding the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this cord that ripped out of the thing as it fell out the window, as the other looked down at the damage to the hood of the family car after the AC hit. There is/was a saying in the Navy. ” don’t nuke it”. Oddly it did not mean do not hit the red button and end the world. It meant stop overthinking/not thinking something out. It came from the idea that the nuclear technicians, the souls who ran the nuclear reactors where fucking the smartest of us all (well near the top) but the mother Fuckers could get lost walking to their berthing. Very smart, very well educated people but no common sense. You wanted common sense? Hunt down a upper enlisted boatswain mate. Considered the “dumb” job, these guys knew their shit.
You’ll never find someone more incompetent at basic tasks than an academic. All those years learning and dedicating their lives to being great at what they do that outside their specialty they’re about as much use as a teenager at best and it’s hilarious. Good friend of mine is a fucking amazing lawyer to the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this point she’s head of legal for the company she works but fuck me she is dumb as shit, absolutely no common sense whatsoever. My brother had this friend in high school and college who is BRILLIANT academically. The US government paid for him to go to college and get a specialized degree because they wanted him that badly. Dude only just about functions as a human being, though. When he and my brother were roommates, he literally handed him a stack of blank checks for him to fill out for him when rent was due because he would never remember to pay it, otherwise. He was an expert at breaking into his own car because he locked his keys in it so many times. He’s had food poisoning multiple times because he’d leave food out, forget about it, find it a couple of days later, and assume it had only been out for a couple of hours. He ended up getting married to someone who can remind him to put his pants on in the morning. Booksmarts just mean you’re good at books.
Success in school is largely a function of your home life. I’m not sure why you think it’s connected to the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this speed at which you do daily tasks. All Classes and those grading said classes are not created equal. We do not have a federal set of standards that would dictate common curriculum across the country. That being said, generally the higher the education the more specificity until one has to defend a position on a very specific aspect of a broader field of study. Most people tend to think this works opposite to how it actually does. The expertise is supposed to be demonstrated in a broader sense in the defense of the particular and hopefully something novel. My wife is a attorney and doesn’t know how to mop. Her mom just never made her do chores in lieu of focusing on academics. She’s awesome and I brag how smart she is but if you wanted to have her make dinner it’s going to take a few hours and she’s going to need help peeling potatoes.
many of these gifted people have a habit of believing they have peak inteligence so they tend to tune out anything thatight teach them about what they dont know about already because the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this importance for life for them is not in continuing to learn but in staying at the top of the inteligent pile. which means you miss a lot a lot a lot of oppotunities for learning. My ex husband and I would joke that he was “specialised”. He was far more educated than I, but didn’t understand how to do basic things in life and struggled with day to day things. Certainly, he was intelligent, but he used all that brain power on specific topics. I’d like to consider myself intelligent too, but I’m more a Jack-of-all-trades.
I think it’s Einstein who said something like…”you cannot judge a fish’s ability to swim by watching it climb a tree…” I assume that’s what happened with this. Intellectual prowess is confined to subjects that interest the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this learner. If day to day tasks don’t fascinate them then why would they become adept at them. One of the girls in my grade was super book smart, but an absolute ditz at real-life situations. I feel like this is actually pretty common. My ex-girlfriend was very smart. But her running inner dialogue about herself kept her in a clunky and crashy mode most of the time. She sabotaged her own progress. She doubted every thought she ever had. She would voice a strong thought and then overwhelm me with digressive thoughts so, eventually, I didn’t try and keep her own thoughts alive in the midst of her subterfuge. She never got what she wanted, even if she started something with “I want…” and I agreed to it.
Some of the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this communities in rural upstate New York are like the depths of poor Appalachia. Where did she go to school? Rural life is slow, standards are usually less. If you’re growing up with some of the best schools in the country then your reference point is off. My sister is a straight A, top of her class but doesn’t have the mental capacity to get ready for 2 turns ahead while driving. We all say she has absolutely no street smarts. It’s crazy, idk how she does it. My dad is competent but my mom is both super competent and smart. I’m smart and competent but sis is just super smart and incompetent My boyfriend is a physicist yet he doesn’t know if he has tonsils because he doesn’t know what a tonsil is. Not to mock him (I find him adorable in a way) but to say he’s not stupid. He just has a different intelligence he put to service in a different cultural field
274 more repliesIf there’s one thing law school taught me, there’s a lot of different types of “smart” and there’s no linear curve to it. I knew people who were brilliant, at the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this top of our class, but had difficulty landing a job (presumably because of bad interview skills). I knew people who could write a masterpiece with no effort, but would shrivel into a mess if made to speak in front of people (even people they’d known for years). On the other hand, there’s lawyers who graduated bottom of their class but are now mega-millionaires thanks to good business acumen. My father is truly (i think) a genius. I know his brother is off the charts smart IQ wise, my dad would never take an IQ test. Having been a computer engineer since the 1970s, he possesses an unparalleled mastery over both hardware and software. Yet, I find myself perplexed observing him handle seemingly simple tasks, such as conducting a Google search. His approach to problem-solving is methodical, beginning at the most fundamental level and progressing step by step, which is both time-consuming and slow. This observation has led me to understand that he never just jumps in at an intermediate point to adapt; instead, he insists on comprehensively understanding everything from the beginning. It’s impossible to merely approach him with a problem without first laying the groundwork, as he becomes frustrated if he cannot start from the basics. Articulating this peculiarity is challenging. BUT my point is it could appear he’s kind of slow in some cases. I think some really smart people are just different and its really cool if you slow down and watch.
Speaking as a former honors student: There’s a good chance that she overthinks things that you just do easily, and/or she’s not paying attention to the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this task at hand because 90% of her thoughts are focused on something else. I have a college degree and am pretty good at a job that most people can’t do. Also, if you tell me to turn left, it’s really a 50/50 shot that I’ll turn the wrong way Focus. Being able to focus on a single task and ignoring everything else is incredibly difficult. It’s also something I’ve noticed in phd’s. Really really smart in a certain part of knowledge, all over the place in everything else. My little brother is going to be an ER doctor very soon and is extremely good at being a doctor and has saved many lives in training and as a paramedic before. I don’t trust him with a hammer in my house though, nor to replace the batteries in any of my son’s toys. It’s different types of intelligence, neither of you are dumb you are able to excel in different settings requiring different skills.
Reminds me: Several years ago company hired PHD in engineering to head a research project. My personal observation if this person went to the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this mail box he would get lost. A coworker in a heated conservation told him he did not know it was possible for one person to be so stupid. The PHD’s response was something to the effect of “do not argue with me I have PHD. My coworker’s reply to that was that OK you are still stupid People are just better at different things. My Current partner is the stereotypical smart girl. Was in the gifted and talented program all through school, has a masters. Is just a fun person, but knows absolutely nothing outside of the academic or musical field, it’s truly baffling to me. I am always shocked at the things I have to explain that I just assume people know.
Yes this Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this is a thing. My 10 year old daughter is a genius. I mean a literal genius. She can do and comprehend things that adults struggle with but has issues with age related tasks like cleaning and time management etc. It’s like her brain just operates in its own realm at times. Processing speed, memory/recall, and logical problem solving are not united on a fixed plane. You can excel at them individually or in any combination. School often disregards speed but most workplaces prize it. Ive know plenty of honor students that have a perfectionist mindset. It is what allowed them to get honors in school, but in real life it leads them to be slow and hesitant on everyday tasks out of fear of messing up. To be high performing in school, you need some amount of intelligence, but you also need a good amount of “do what you’re told” personality. Totally anecdotal, but I’ve found that being motivated and skilled at doing what’s expected of you is inversely correlated with being able to think for yourself (including in matters of “common sense”).
A lot of people who are book smart have trouble with street smarts because they typically overthink basic tasks. My grandfather was the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this smartest man I ever met. He could play any musical instrument you handed him, flew planes, amazing at math, etc. I also witnessed the same man microwave a fork and eat bologna that had been sitting on the counter for 3 days. Totally possible. I was in special Ed classes at top notch public schools that got blue ribbon education awards. I know more than some that were in ap classes at average schools. Furthermore my sister took calculus 2 in 8 th grade….however she cannot boil a box of macaroni without it being a special project! Math wizard and into statistics. Some how she thought a car jack that clearly stated do not use over 3 tons…she decides to use it on a big ass SUV!
I got great at “doing school” really well. Academic learning is a kind of skill/trick you can learn to do well, but man it does not always translate to then actual like real world problem solving. That person drove me up the Toughest Bird in Philly Shirt moreover I love this wall because struggled with several aspects of day to day life. Like: adjusting a back pack, reading directions to navigate a place, small repairs (like changing light bulbs), picking up a document at a doctor, sharing equipments at gym… I had to tutor her in college algebra and found myself extremely frustrated how much she didn’t know. She studied from morning to night for those good grades while I put it off until midnight before. I’ve worked with plenty of smart engineers to know they can be deliberate and plodding at work. Thinking fast isn’t always best. Think well is best, however long that takes.
