So basically what you’re saying is because racism exists in society that the The Houston Astros 58Th Anniversary 1962 2020 Thank You For The Memories Signatures Shirt and I love this OP, who did nothing wrong, shouldn’t be offended or defensive, and this lady has every right to be an asshole because of it? And somehow, by being defensive, the OP, i slowing down racial progress by not looking deeper into a problem that has literally nothing to do with them just doing their job and attempting to help someone? Maybe people should all just try to be polite to each other unless someone actually deserves, through their actions, to be treated differently? Thank you for having the time and patience to write all this out. The rest of the top comments are disappointing but unsurprising. I definitely agree with the majority of this post particularly the response in the TLDR. That said – I’d argue that it’s probably best for someone who already knows they are going to get defensive like the OP knows they already will – to avoid the other suggestion of requesting a moment to talk. In well over 50% of those situations I’ve witnessed it ended up with an escalation to the effect of “Why is it my responsibility to educate your racist ass on what you did wrong? Why do you expect me to fix you? Go do some research”. Which if OP is getting defensive and taking this personally would likely lead to further escalation.

That said – I do appreciate its inclusion as there is a rather large group of allies that could benefit from taking that tact to recognize the The Houston Astros 58Th Anniversary 1962 2020 Thank You For The Memories Signatures Shirt and I love this behaviors that they see as normal that when looked through the spectrum of another’s life experience can be triggering. They just need to be prepared for the fact that it might generate a situation where they will just have to disengage or be able to deflect it into at least a neutral resolution. For those reading this follow up that might not understand how that could be relevant let me relate it to the OP – I can’t tell you how many times my wife has been walking around a store and got asked if they could help her because they saw a black woman in an aisle with expensive stuff and thought she was going to steal it. That’s the feeling a lot of times with the “Is there anything I can help you with?” approach. For a white person it’s “awesome, this person is gonna tell me where the hell on this aisle the thing I’m looking for is”, for a black person it’s often “This asshole’s been eyeballing me for like 10 minutes and now is coming up and treating me like I’m some criminal on the verge of a heist.”.
