I have a sheet that lists the basics; first local like closest urgent care, ATM locations, bagel recommendations, how to get to the train station, where the bus to NYC stops, how to travel to and from American Dream, Metlife Stadium, basic NYC tips like don’t take a pedicab unless you agree on a rate FIRST, the people in costumes expect to be paid for photos … I leave it on the dresser and if someone asks questions before they get here, I try my best to help and will send them a link to what they are looking for. I do not do the tasks for them though. I have only asked questions like this at 2 stays, and both were cases where the host had a little AirBnB empire going with a concierge service to handle requests (tours, rentals, etc). Would never dream of asking otherwise!

Almost every single host will normally have an area where you see helpful suggestions for food, etc. I spent 10 years in a high end 5 star hotel in a major city; it’s normal for the Concierge to answer this continually. I was surprised when I started and by the end you have no idea the kind of requests and neediness I dealt with. It’s part of the service and I enjoyed the challenge. However – for an Airbnb this is inappropriate in my opinion, aside from a few basics you’re not there to source things and hand hold. As frequent travels and user of str’s we research an area long before selecting a place to stay. Only time I asked a host recommendation was for a taverna for my birthday dinner and that was weeks before arrival. Some hosts are a little more forthcoming with local info and I just grin and bear it and thank them. Sometimes I’ll ask my host questions like “do you know where we might be able to find this item locally” or “is there a particular resturant locally you recommend”. I’ll usually also ask about getting there from the airport and while I’m there if I can’t find something I’ll ask the host. I expect them to be available within sociable hours but I don’t expect them to respond to me immediately. Sometimes I’ll message a host on average 1-2 times a day while I’m their and other times I won’t message them the entire stay except to let them know we’ve arrived and we’ve left. AirBnB’s are more expensive than hotels these days and I think it’s reasonable to expect a little personality for the money such as the host being available to answer the odd questions. However I don’t like to badger them and I certainly don’t expect them to act as a tour guide. But a few local tips and recommendations is reasonable enough I think
