It would not have worked if it was not Salem. From the start, Sometimes I Wish I Were An Octopus So I Could Slap 8 People At Once Flamingo shirt was searching for a place steeped in a particular mix of rationality and superstition. And later, the entire setup of Salem was meant to nurture Abigail into a vessel for Yog-Sothoth, by repeating over and over the tragedy, she helped incite. Even if the actual incidents of Salem are passed, they are still sins that haunt Abigail and sins she must atone for. That is the meaning for the repetition of the trials. Just because it was predicted doesn’t mean it’s meaningless.

I understand the guilt she feels from her experiences within the play Raum set up, I just don’t grasp why it needed to be Abigail in this story. The whole thing felt like it was just setting up expectations for the reader, then subverting them for the sake of it. I had been expecting Abigail to either be a different person wrapped up in the play, or the original Abigail acting as someone else; but no, surprise, it IS Abigail, but she’s now she’s developed a conscience off-screen (which, if she had one in the original Salem, would have almost certainly caused events to play out differently).

A good chunk of why this chapter disappointed me so much is probably personal bias due to how much I loved Miller’s The Crucible. This is the first time I was so educated about one of the story’s settings that I’d be able to properly come up with theories of my own going through it, as opposed to other chapters. Where my cursory knowledge of mythology and whatnot is nowhere near enough to give any decent insight into what’s really being referenced. But instead, Salem only helped pose a question and held no answers, even carrying false flags which the story happily used.
