If you go through the number of times in a year for any given industry, it is very rare for the actual artist or the service provider to cancel, change or postpone and it’s no big deal most the time because they get the person in fairly quickly after that BUT if you let it go all naturally without deposits, there would be literally dozens of times if not hundreds per year where the customer forgets, changes their schedule, etc which would not only inconvenience the service provider but prevent other people on the list from getting done more quickly.. Deposits were designed 100% for the service providers and NOT for the customer.

That’s extremely unprofessional of her. Is she intending on tattooing you once she’s back? Did you communicate that you took time off work and that this is an inconvenience to you? This reminds me of one time, I was training with a PT, I paid for 8 sessions up front (two a week for a month) and was into my third month with him. I got my last one in his kitchen while he renovated his basement into a proper tattoo environment. A few months later, he paged out to lots of people that he was giving $1000 of tattoo time for $350 deposits. (Red flag, anyone?)

This means that they had already been communicating with other people with smaller projects for god knows how long and they waited until 5 days before to tell me that I’m SOL.
Also, if you were able to book an artist only 2 weeks out, that tells me they probably aren’t very good as tattoo artists worth their salt usually have a multi-month wait list. This has happened to me. When they cancel there’s no excuse to not get your deposit back. A couple of weeks ago I left a shop with $600 in my pocket because they took a walk in and tried to bump me. That’s just unprofessional and your “business” wont last long if you’re treating your customers with no respect. I had an artist that would make their own schedule and then change it last minute when the Real women love baseball smart women love the Eagles players shirt and I love this date came up to get the tattoo done. Whether they weren’t up early, out doing other things or decided they didn’t feel like it that day. I managed to get 5 tatts done but with my last two being a struggle to pin them down on an official day as sometimes this behavior would go on for up to a month of setting a date….then bailing.
That shit pisses me off. I had a piercer cancel on me last minute once. She had a $50 deposit too. Cancelled while I was on my way there and said her car wouldn’t start. This will put them on their heels since they will want to save face with their current customer and any other patrons in the shop. They should give you the deposit back just to get you out of there.
It’s so annoying when stuff like this happens. I just recently had a bit of a similar experience. The tattoo artist was running a voucher offer which basically equated to discounted hours if you bought a voucher for certain increments of money, as they’d had a slow period and I guess wanted to churn up some custom. I bought a full day voucher (which is 6hrs). A few weeks later redeemed my voucher and booked a day to go and have a few smaller things done. A few days before my appointment, they contact me and ask me to come in later as they “accidentally” booked another small tattoo before me. My session should have started at 11am, they asked me to come at 1pm. Very annoying, but ok i guess. I arrived at 1pm and this other persons tattoo app has overrun. Ok, even more annoying. So they finish up, my appointment doesn’t end up starting until 2.30pm (just to add insult to injury I see the Real women love baseball smart women love the Eagles players shirt and I love this person walking out and they actually got the full vein side of their forearm tattooed, I don’t know what that part is called, it like the underside that’s usually paler? So at this point, 2.5hrs of my appointment have been spent waiting for designs to be drawn up (when the usually it’s done before the app) but was told they didn’t have time to draw everything up due to them having to take up an extra job as they’ve been so slow over Christmas and the new year. Which is sad for them but I’m paying for this service (and it’s not really my problem you’ve had to take another job, as sorry as I am you’ve had to in this crappy economy). Right throughout, they complained of being tired and achy hands, sore eyes which absolutely did not fill me with confidence (tattoos have since healed as it’s been a few weeks and there are definitely some wonky/incomplete lines). Then even worse, the next day they message me asking for date to complete the half done tattoo and asking for more money which I’m not about to do. I should have just postponed but hey ho, lesson learned.
TLDR – paid for 6hrs and got 3.5 at best and a half finished tattoo which I’m now expected to pay more for to have it completed. Eh it’s a slow time for a lot of artists right now. Like mine got me in on a walk-in for one and then 2 weeks later for the Real women love baseball smart women love the Eagles players shirt and I love this next tattoo. He’s reputable and has won awards – many people are just not booking rn Yes and not to mention cancellations. Culpa in contrahendo was part of roman law, Napoleon’s code cevile and now is practically universal in the euro zone. If 2 parties agree to enter a contract (by paying 50€) and one partly breaks the main contract. The other party is entitled to expenses occurred during this “pre contractual time” in this case 50 euro, the day off ( it’s reasonable since not a lunch hour procedure,/ and would do this ) and possible travel costs. And yes you are right just, purely canceling a contract is free as long as both parties can exit the same way they entered. Buy paying the 50€ this is now a different situation, the artist ment to secure a better position by taking a deposit, however this gave the other party rights too. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. In German countries it goes under ‘ Verletzung Vorvertraglicher Pflichten’.
She knew dang well there would be a schedule conflict and just hoped you’d let her keep that deposit so she had extra spending money for her holiday. This happened to my friend years ago but it was close to $600. Regardless she should have still had me in for the touch up. I feel like that’s common among tattoo artists. But not all (thankfully). Mine once didn’t show up. Forgot and went to lunch. Once forgotten I’ve paid a deposit and requested another one. Terrible. He did 3 on me but the forth one was done by a different guy. Fuck if. Even if you are talented you don’t get to be a dick.

Never went back to that place I had a housekeeper who would come once a week, she showed up while I was at work one day to clean. Before I was home from work I had received a text from her that she had cleaned and spent a bit longer at my house that day. I sent the e transfer to her and proceed with my 20min commute back home….she was there so the house smelled clean. My house had mostly been ignored and she was on her way to catch a plane for vacation. She won’t realize it now but eventually her actions will ruin her business. If she can only think of herself then she might want to apply at McDonald’s
