Yes to the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and Lusitania but no to WWII- it’s too reductionist to say that the US entered WWII because of U-boats. Pearl Harbor was not because of U-boats. U-boats didn’t make Germany declare war on the US post-Pearl Harbor. U-boats did not dictate Japanese policy in the years leading up to their invasion of China and then the rest of the Pacific. And the list goes on. US did not enter war due to shocking sinking of Lusitania, a ship loaded with ammunition sunk pretty much right next to the british isles in legally declared war zone. People always call the M4 Sherman a death trap despite having some of the highest survival rates of all tanks during the war. U-Boats however, those were real death traps. Not to mention the M4 was one of if not the best tanks when it came to survival, with crew hatches fucking everywhere that were very easy to open and close
Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee
That’s pretty fucking insane. The merchant marines had twice the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and KIA rate as the army and that was “only” 4%. I’m assuming the casualty rate is pretty close to the KIA rate. There’s a walk in Liberty Station, San Diego, lined with memorials to US submarines and their crews. It’s sad to read the plaques of so many lost, with many listed as “on eternal patrol”. U.S subs are listed as never lost but always listed as on patrol and each Christmas a message is sent out to them to wish them a Merry Christmas This is neither here not there, but when I first heard of the board game, Axis and Allies, I thought they were saying Axes and Allies and it was a fantasy board games akin to Dungeons and Dragons
Imagine how much more damage they would have done if the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and mark 14 torpedo worked properly in the first place or if the issues were fixed in an apporpriate time. I am going to hazard a guess, that most of axis shipping lost would be Japanese. And the Japanese never implemented convey shipping thus their heavy casualties. This number could have been significantly higher had bureau of ordinance heeded combate reports and fixed the mark 14 torpedoes sooner. To be fair to the Japanese, to some extent they couldn’t. They didn’t have enough ships to both cover convoys and contest Allied navies for control of the seas. The neglect of convoys also makes a little more sense when viewed through the perspective of Japan’s strategic thinking that the war could be won with a single Tshushima scale decisive naval victory. Your merchant fleet ending up on the bottom is only a problem in a protracted war that goes years, which is not what Japan wanted or expected.

Where to buy this Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt
Here’s another fun fact: in the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and entire history of warfare, a submerged submarine has sunk another submerged submarine exactly once, when U-864 was sunk by HMS Venturer in 1945. This glosses over Allied codebreaking which was so thorough that we had to pick and choose our targets so the Axis wouldn’t know their communications were compromised. We would fake transmissions from spotter aircraft to ascribe to luck what intelligence accomplished. More impressive when you consider that you have a better chance of riding a fiery chariot to heaven before you death. I feel like I’m having a stroke. Like I sort of get what both your sentences mean but I don’t at the same time. Am I going crazy? “More impressive when you consider that you would have had a better chance of riding a fiery chariot to heaven before your death than an American submarine had of their torpedoes working for about half of the war.” Even when the sentence is put together more reasonably by you through inference it is still very very strange and near nonsensical. To explain the latter half of the comment, the American Mark 14 was the main US torpedo for the beginning and middle of WW2. It was stupid unreliable and plagued with issues that weren’t solved until way later on. Oh god I despise the mark 14. I wrote a damn paper on it for one of my history classes in college. Fuckin BUoRD. The torpedo had a host of design problems with many of them stemming from the dumbass magnetic exploder they wanted to use. Sure it was a god idea, breaking a ships keel is a near sink every time. Getting the exploder to work every time was a whole other question they decided didn’t need answering.
Now torpedos are expensive, like hella fuckin expensive. So the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and navy guarded these things like they were the One Ring. So they didn’t like testing them, at all. They did a few test but none were live fire. So then along comes Pearl Harbor. Well the pacific fleet (sans carriers and subs) gets all sorts of fucked up. Wanna know what else got fucked up? A bunch of mark 14s. So now the navy really REALLY doesn’t want to waste any on test. While the main fleet licks their wounds it was left to the sub crews to strike back, and well…… The torpedos sucked, like sucked a lot. I’m talking every possible issue. Torpedos running deep, torpedos running off course, duds, early detonation, the list goes on. Worst of all was a fairly bad habit of the torpedo circling back around at the sub that fired it. Not good things for your main submarine torpedo to be doing. Sub captains start modifying their torpedos, most notably by disabling the magnetic exploder (opting for the back up impact one instead) and setting the torpedos way shallower. They start getting some success! The captains start relaying this info back up to command and well…. BUoRD got pissed. Like HELLA HELLA MAD. It didn’t help that one of the sub admirals worked on the mark 14 and refused to admit wrong doing.
Long story short new admiral comes along, demands test be done. They found that the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and torpedos were indeed, running deep. They placed the depth sensor in a stupid spot and it was an easy fix. Next up was the exploder. So the magnetic one was found to work, somewhat if you pray to the right divine being, around the mid Atlantic region. That was because earths magnetic field ain’t the same every where on earth. So the exploder was pretty much useless in the pacific. Least the backup exploder had no issues, right? Wrong. It was at a canted angle that was prone to jamming at high deceleration, such as smacking into a battleship. So the navy pools their collective brain cells and somehow fixes the damn torpedo. And I mean like, it fucking worked. Every other nation had given up on using magnetic exploders (except some German models which also had some issues) and successfully broke ships keels with them. Most notable the IJN Shinano which was the largest aircraft carrier in the world, being built on the third Yamato class battleship hull.
The mark 14 would go on to be one of the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and longest serving torpedos and still holds the record for largest ship sunk in combat. I recently heard a pod cast about the Japanese in WWII. Had they had an industry like the Americans it probably would have been impossible to beat them. They had superior technology, but it was built by artisans in small factories. The places were the places were built was in a place where they had to be pulled by oxen to air strips because rail was too hard on the component’s and they didn’t have trucks to get them there. Also no strips. Something along these lines. The allies had success in a few decisive battles that cut off their trade and that basically beat them. The rest was dominoes.
Japanese didn’t exactly have better technology. Their industry was forced to make a bunch of sacrifices for “good” equipment. Take the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and Zero for example. It was fast, maneuverable, and heavily armed for its time. How did it accomplish all of those? Well, the designers skimped out on its armor. The thing was super fragile, and all it took was a short burst from the six .50 cals of an F4F or F6F to destroy it. Not all of them – they skipped those that didn’t matter and the Japanese soldiers often starved to death, no threat and useless until the surrender they didnt have oil and took too much time getting it. Even with advanced industry you need to power the warmachines.
Sure, but it’s kind of a ridiculous statement to make. The US industry at the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and time was unmatched, ONE plant was producing more tanks than the entirety of Germany, and they were giving most of them away to the Brits and Soviets. The thing about that is “superior technology” requires mass production. Mass production IS superior technology even if the item being produced is not exactly top of the line. Sure some artisans can produce probably the best ship mounted turret ever to exist in 1940. If it takes you 3 years to make 1 single ship gun then sure your specific product may be superior. But my mass production is going to fuck you up by a measure of thousands more naval guns that will drown you out. The next big theater for subs is going to be the Taiwan. We are going to see what big technologies have done to enhance the lethalities of these nuclear powered absolute killing machines.
Everyone thinks that US carrier groups are an ultimate weapon but the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and real ace in the hole IMO is the independently operated submarine force. A Virginia class sub might be the pinnacle of naval power. Oh, boomers are a great nuclear deterrent, but that’s one of those things you don’t ever want to actually use. They do their job just by existing. A US submarine was responsible for the single greatest sinking of an enemy ship by tonnage in one engagement, managing to torpedo and sink the Carrier Shinano by itself The use of the word ‘warship’ is a bit misleading. People tend to think of the battleships, cruisers, destroyers etc. Here the number is referring to every ship in service of the IJN, which includes merchant shipping.
Merchant ships were the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and most sunk ships of WW2 by far. Japan lost 2346 merchant ships, accounting for a majority of the 3057 ships they lost overall. Due to the nature of WW2 naval combat, submarines and aircraft were the attacking forces. The surface combat vessels were defensive forces. It makes logical sense that submarines would be responsible for sinking a lot of ships, that was their job. And Japan had a much, much larger navy than of any of the other Axis powers during WW2. Combined with poor ASW practices, lack of resources put towards dedicated ASW ships, and technological inferiority compared to the US navy, the Japanese suffered greatly from the US submarine campaign. I mean we don’t wanna forget the hunt for Bismarck…… you sink the flag ship of the British navy well you might as well invade Russia while your at it
German’s submarine fleet was totaled by Fletcher Class destroyers and DEs in the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and Atlantic, allowing shipping to get through Of the U-boats, 519 were sunk by British, Canadian, or other allied forces, while 175 were destroyed by American forces It was the most successful submarine campaign in human history and largely accomplished doing to Japan what the U-boat campaign failed to do to Britain. The reason why the U-boat campaign in the Atlantic has a more prominent place in popular memory is that the press in London, Washington D.C., or New York often did not report on the successes of U.S. submarines in the Pacific for operational security reasons. There was no such concern about the activities of Axis submarines of course, so they were reported on extensively. In contrast the Allied submarine campaign in the Pacific was much more out of sight and out of mind.
In fact, it was a US Congresscritter commenting to the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and bloody press! during the war that IJN depth charges were set too shallow and missing our subs, an oversight the Japanese quickly corrected, resulting in obvious losses. Factories win wars. Bethlehem Steel can take a lot of the credit for the submarine and surface vessels, if not all of them. Eugene Grace was visionary in this respect. The vast number of submarines, Liberty Ships and aircraft carriers, and the outcome or at least the progress of both WW1 and WW2 would have been very different without Eugene Grace. Funny though, when I think of the big naval encounters of WWII, I don’t think of subs. Midway and Leyte Gulf were the biggest losses for the Japanese in one day, and subs had nothing to do with either one. In the Atlantic, all the Germans had was the Graf Spee, the Bismarck and the Tirpitz. The Bismarck had one famous sortie when it destroyed the Hood and the Prince of Wales, but then it was hounded and finally sunk by surface ships (with help from a torpedo bomber from the Ark Royal). The Graf Spee had some success as a raider of commercial shipping (they allowed crews to disembark before sinking the ships) before being hounded by a huge Allied task force. After a fire fight, the Graf Spee limped into neutral Montevideo and eventually was scuttled there. The Tirpitz spent most of the war bottled up in a North Sea port. So while I don’t dispute the facts OP presents, I’d suggest the ships the subs sunk were mostly destroyers and other smaller ships.
Midway and Leyte Gulf were the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and biggest losses for the Japanese in one day, and subs had nothing to do with either one. Uhh what? During the battle of Leyte gulf the heavy cruisers Maya and Atago, and the light cruiser Tama were sunk by US submarines. In addition the heavy cruiser Takao was damaged and forced to return to port (also depriving the force of two destroyers). In addition USS Tang made an attack against a Japanese convoy brining in reinforcements to the battle sinking two large freighters (~7000 tons each), possibly a destroyer, and herself with her last torpedo. As for Midway. US submarines were involved, not successfully, but they were there. USS Nautilus made several attempted attacks on the Japanese carrier force. At one point a destroyer that had stayed behind to depth charge the sub and was racing back to the carriers pointed US pilots towards the location of said carriers. Later the Nautilus put a dud torpedo into a carrier (probably Kaga). USS Tambor famously put out a really awful sighting report, but somewhat more amusingly the response of the Japanese ships to seeing the US submarine resulted in two heavy cruisers colliding, taking both out and causing enough damage to the Mikuma that she was later caught and sunk by US dive bombers. Also, not terribly relevant to this discussion but Japans only real success in the battle was her submarine I-168 sinking a US carrier and destroyer.
And the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and Admiral Graf Spee’s two sister ships, Admiral Scheer, and Deutschland (aka Lutzow). And Germanys two battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. And three Admiral Hipper class battle cruisers, and six light cruisers. Plus the three horifically obsolete pre-dreadnaught battleships (which in all likelyhood were not going into the Atlantic). I think you’ll find that the Prince of Wales survived her engagement with the Bismarck and was sunk by the Japanese about 6 months later. but then it was hounded and finally sunk by surface ships (with help from a torpedo bomber from the Ark Royal). Bismarck was attacked by bombers from Victorious (which slowed her down for a while and contributed to the decision for her to return to France) and Ark Royal (which jammed her rudder eventually getting her sunk).
The Graf Spee had some success as a raider of commercial shipping (they allowed crews to disembark before sinking the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and ships) If by “disembark” you mean “captured”. The crews of those ships were effectively taken prisoner and stuck on the German tanker Altmark. We had a large graph on the wall of tonnage sunk in the pacific by each category of vessel. You had destroyed, battleships, and carriers all sinking good amounts of Japanese shipping. But Submarines stood head and shoulders above all the rest. Also had a cool map of where each ship sunk by a US submarine was, and wether it was military or merchant by using an imperial Japanese flag, or a regular Japanese flag, wherever we sunk it. Would have been more if only the US government actually listened to their sailors when they told them that the torpedoes they where using did not work. Two years later they admitted there was a problem and took steps to fix them. Look up the torpedoe scandal 1944 It wasn’t the Government as a whole, just BurOrd who finally got around to shutting the fuck up and letting the Mk18 go into service in 1944. Same can be said about Nazi subs. They were absolutely devastating. Thankfully, Hitler ignored his sub fleet commanders plea for funding and instead went with his sky approach, thus heavily investing in the sky and not the sea. There’s an argument to be made that if the Nazi’s would’ve continued to focus in the sea, the war would’ve looked completely different. Who knows. By ‘43 Allied tactics and innovation made u-boating much more dangerous and vastly less effective. No amount of plausible numbers of u-boats would stop D-Day or remove allied naval superiority. U-boating being a decisive factor was a foregone conclusion.
The 55% number is misleadingly low because the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and last year of the war many axis ships were sunk by allied air because the subs had made the seas safe for the carriers and penned the shipping to coasts and safe areas. The other interesting stat there is that submariners made up just 1.6% of the US Navy at that time, and they were an all-volunteer force. In movies it’s almost always submarines shooting at each other. In reality they’ve almost exclusively sank surface ships and are usually killed by surface ships as well. In the entire history of naval warfare there is only 1 documented case of a submerged submarine sinking another submerged submarine. The HMS Venturer sank U-864 in 1945. I feel like “submerged” is doing A LOT of work here. For example the Germans had 23 other U-boats sunk by submarines in the war. Not sure how many were torpedoed, but probably most. A submerged sub shooting at a surfaced one also isn’t really any different from shooting at a conventional surface ship. Submerged vs Submerged is what people always imagine for Sub on Sub battles. Just turns out that is not very accurate. There is/was a map in the Chiefs Bachelor’s Quarters (barracks for unmarried senior enlisted personnel) on the Groton, CT Submarine base of all the U.S. submarine “kills” during WWII. The map was a full-on 20 or so foot by 9 or 10 foot tall mural & listed the tonnage of Axis ships destroyed. I tried finding a pic online to no avail.
The only argument I will entertain against dropping the Pope Leo XIV From Oblock meme shirt and by the same token and atomic bomb was the submarines had the Japanese beat long before. They were so starved of resources they couldn’t do shit by the end. Granted they still did and were arming civilians as well as children so it isn’t like they would have surrendered, it just made EFFECTIVE fighting impossible. Interesting, but that article was pretty rough, between the spelling mistakes and weird wrong translations, I gave up reading it. Das Boot, ideally the directors cut, is great. The directions cut is pretty long, but Das Boot was originally a miniseries, so the “full version” is REALLY long if you don’t break it up. There are a bunch of movies in the “early post-war category”: Operation Pacific, Torpedo Run, and Operation Petticoat are probably the three best known ones. None of them are what I would call “good”, but the last one is a comedy which at least makes it “fun”. There is also a British sub film Above Us The Waves which I know very little about. Destination Tokyo is pretty cheesy at bits, but might deserve a watch as a prototype WWII submarine movie, made during the war. We Dive at Dawn is another of the type but British. Crash Dive is also in this category but it’s pretty bad. If you’re interested in movies where submarines are really important even if I wouldn’t call them “submarine movies” then Greyhound is a good watch. Sounds like we are waiting on the 4th installation for Hanks/Spielberg to get a truly good WWII submarine series.
