I ended up leaving my rental car at the port for Vestmannaeyjar for two days, hopping on a ferry, and wandering around the island on foot. I though that was going to be the totality of my viewing. Something called me back towards the lava field around the volcano before I went back to my accommodation. It was dark and uneven and probably the not the smartest move to be wandering around on my own, but after about ten minutes or so of doing so, the Northern Lights were directly overhead for about another ten minutes. So bright, the best way I’ve ever been able to describe it is like a flashlight in the sky. Just me, in a pitchblack lava field in Iceland, and the most vivid green lights I’ve ever seen. I’m so lucky to have seen that.

We had to stop when faced with any oncoming vehicles when one of us had to back up until the road could fit us both. There were hardly any straight parts, so we had to do a blind reverse around the curves. It was a lonnng drive, but not as long as the return trip over the same highway. 😀
