“It is kinda crazy that I’m the One thankful Teacher Chicken Shirt in addition I really love this first, I hadn’t even thought about it that way,” Melissa Barrera admits when I point out how monumental it is that she’s Clinique’s first Global Brand Ambassador to hail from either of the Americas. (Barrera joins London-born Emilia Clarke, who was announced as a global ambassador last year.) She’s surrounded by Clinique’s VR logo background on a Zoom setup in Los Angeles—the city she’ll call home for a few more days until she moves to Austin to be closer to family in Monterrey, Mexico. Soon, she’ll drive to Venice for her first photoshoot with the brand, a social announcement ahead of the official campaign this fall. “It makes me feel good that little Latinas are going to be able to see me and think that they can also be the face of a brand globally, I feel like that means a lot,” says Barrera. “I’ve always dreamed of having a campaign like this, and I never saw anyone that looked like me, or that had a name that sounded like mine, or that I knew was a Latina.”For the past decade, Barrera has hopped back and forth between Mexico and America. After growing up in Monterrey, she studied in New York at Tisch School of the Arts, then returned to Mexico to star in telenovela Siempre tuya Acapulco. It was back to the U.S. to film the TV drama series Vida, and later to star as Vanessa in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s screen adaptation of the musical In the Heights (not to mention the titular character in Carmen). Barrera is still in I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it mode when she imagines being on a Tribeca red carpet for In The Heights next week for the film’s premiere in advance of its June 11 release. “I think it’s a movie that is going to move a lot of people, is going to mean a lot, especially to the Latinx community,” she says. “I can feel all the opportunities that are happening for our community, and me being able to do this with Clinique feels like a big step—not just for me, for everyone.”The beauty brand appreciates the work Barrera has put in to get her to this point. “We want people with substance to represent Clinique, more than just pretty faces and talking heads,” says Elizabeth Nolan, Clinique’s Global Creative Director. “We knew immediately that Melissa’s energy and passion are inextricable from what makes her so beautiful and are excited to bring our products to life in a new way with her bold voice.” Barrera plans to use that unique voice for greater connection. “I want to be able to speak to all of these people in Latin America in Spanish,” she says. “Our community has all felt, whether it’s conscious or unconscious, kind of erased from the world for a long time. Kind of forgotten or unimportant—and it’s our time.” Pantomiming the size of this moment, her floaty white sleeves reach to her short, pale green nails—the color of the iconic packaging she now represents. Barrera recalls her mom doing her makeup for childhood dance recitals with a compact in the same shade. Those early moments preparing for an audience were wrapped up with her introduction to the brand. Today, she’s exactly where she hoped to be. “All the things that I’m living right now are the things that I’ve always wanted to be able to do,” says Barrera. “I also feel like I’ve worked my butt off to be here.”In conversations with Clinique, Barrera says authenticity was top of mind. “Even though I have those memories of my mom and my grandma using the creams and coming back to them, I’m discovering the brand right now,” Barrera shares, adding that it’s important for her to actually use the products that she’s promoting. “I feel like we get lied to all the time out there,” she says of marketing in the oversaturated beauty space. “So I was like, okay, I’m going to try all the things that you have and see if they work—and what works for me—to make sure I’m being honest with people.” So far, her favorites have been the line’s Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator (“it’s genuinely like drinking water when you’re thirsty, for your face”) and their skin-care hybrid Even Better Makeup (“that has, like, three serums—it’s like you put a mask on overnight and you woke up and you feel amazing, and it’s a foundation! It’s mind-blowing”). In her everyday, off-camera life, Barrera is a minimalist. “There’s also a really good lip balm that I carry in my pocket all the time—I actually have it in my backpack,” she says, unzipping and rifling around for proof. “Oh, here it is!” she laughs, reading the label. “Moisture Surge Lip Hydro-Plump Treatment. This feels like a commercial, but I genuinely don’t go anywhere without it.”When I ask if she feels like a magnet centered in a spiral of opportunities, Barrera admits to believing in the law of attraction. “I do believe in thinking and willing things into existence, obviously putting in the work for it,” she says. “Even though it’s ten years in, I don’t feel like I’m in the middle of anything, I weirdly feel like I’m literally just starting my life.”Affiliate Disclaimer: All products featured on Vogue are independently selected by our editors. One thankful Teacher Chicken Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
“[Skin care] is really a great moment to just focus on yourself,” a bare-faced Janet Mock says in Vogue’s latest Beauty Secrets. “It reminds you: this is who I am, this is my face, love myself, here I am…” Today, the Pose writer and activist, who made history for becoming the One thankful Teacher Chicken Shirt in addition I really love this first trans woman of color to direct a television episode, is pulling back the curtain on her everyday above-the-neck routine. “I started really struggling with acne when I was in the 10th grade, probably right after I really went hard and deep into my transition. You know, dealing with hormone therapy, it can kind of do a number in addition to being in puberty,” she recalls. These days, the 38-year-old has exchanged the three-step Proactiv routine of her teenage years with what she calls an “indulgent” arsenal of complexion heroes, such as an exfoliating peel pad, a feel-good peppermint- and patchouli-laced facial mist, and a hyaluronic acid ampoule that she slathers across her skin quite generously. “As Elektra says on Pose, ‘I don’t want to be little; I want to be more!’” Picking up her go-to Benefit Magnet lengthening mascara, Mock continues, “When you take care of your skin, you don’t have to wear as much [makeup].” Instead of piling on products, she now opts for a more breathable equation, which begins with a combination of Laura Mercier and Charlotte Tilbury bases followed by a lightweight concealer from Pat McGrath Labs. “When I was growing up, there weren’t many cosmetics brands that were making colors and hues for all kinds of different ranges of skin tone,” she says. “I’m so glad that we now have Pat McGrath and we have Fenty Beauty, which I also love, out there doing this important work of inclusive beauty and making us all feel like we’re deserving of taking up space not only in the world but in the little things—like in Sephora, at Blue Mercury, at any kind of makeup counter…that we matter and we belong here and we deserve to have products that reflect our range of beauty.” Such a sentiment marks just how far she has come in loving herself: “I used to struggle so much with just accepting myself and looking at myself and saying that who I am and how I am and how I’m presenting right now is the truth to me, and it feels correct and it feels right,” she shares. “Today, we’re struggling so much with this idea of giving space, specifically for trans youth [who are] currently under attack. It’s disappointing that adults are using them as wedge issues in political stuff and not knowing those little intricacies of the struggles that young people, period, go through, [like] accepting themselves, and being a young person that’s also trans, trying to just navigate puberty and childhood and adolescence and all of that stuff, and trying to accept yourself in a culture that’s constantly telling you you don’t belong and we don’t want you there…so the presence of folks like Laverne Cox and MJ Rodriguez and Indya Moore and all of these amazing Black trans women, specifically in media, I think really helps elevate the lived experiences that I think a lot of people are missing in this [world].” Putting her best face forward, Mock then reaches for Milk’s creamy pigment stick—a.k.a. her “MVP” and one of the few products she absolutely must, she notes with a smile, apply before leaving home. “I feel like blush…and bronzer…and mascara…and skin care…and everything, just wakes you up!” she says, breaking into a laugh. A high-shine duo—courtesy of Lancôme’s plumping lip gloss and Glossier’s Haloscope Highlighter, dotted down the bridge of her nose and across her cheekbones—provides the finishing touch. As for her parting words? “Be well, love yourself, take your time, be present, love your body—it’s important! Take care.” Filmed at Viceroy L’Ermitage Beverly HillsBelow, shop Janet Mock’s Beauty Secrets.
