Every time I’m there I encourage their teams to unionize. Trader Joe’s is more profitable than Whole Foods and they don’t have a union either, both desperately need them. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a poorly staffed Trader Joe’s though. I don’t know what pay and benefits look like for TJ’s employees, but I’ve never gotten the feeling they’re trying to limit costs by cutting the number of employees working in their stores. TJ’s should definitely unionize (because all workers should unionize, imo), but they treat their employees waaaaaay better than Whole Foods/Amazon does. Trader Joe’s is at least known for its employees-first culture and save-money-by-reducing-turnover philosophy. Certainly not a perfect workplace, but the #1 way to reduce turnover is to make your workplace Not Shitty, so they do have an incentive to treat people like human beings. Having spent nearly 10 years working between grocery and retail, I can tell you they usually use most of that power to harass the powerless low level employees I know that retail tends to deal with absolutely monstrous customers on daily basis, but I also gotta tell you how frustrating things have gotten from a customer perspective. Not only is it hard to find any help in these giant football stadiums crammed full of shitty goods but when we do, it’s useless because we’re all powerless, both on consumer and the retail workers side. And the company always wins. A lot of people are frustrated with that.
