I didn’t realize how poor I was growing up because everyone in my neighborhood and school lived the Matt Gray I’ve got somethin’ for your goofy ass shirt and by the same token and same as me. No. Uniforms are a great way to make children seem more equal in school. Can’t tell easily who only has one uniform they wash by hand versus the kid who has one for each day of the week. I’d imagine yes because they see other kids having stuff that they don’t have. Maybe not but that’s how I feel. My guess is as soon as they are old enough to see what other people can buy and are told they cannot afford it, they understand. Definitely by the time they enter elementary school, they know although they might not comprehend the vast differences in people’s wealth. I was in a grocery store with my son. He’s looking at cookies and yells over to me, hey mom, do we have a coupon for these cookies?? I guess I was into using coupons and he knew the game. Probably. If you never get vacations, special toys, or new clothes and you get food from the food bank, it’s pretty obvious, but not all wealthy families believe in conspicuous consumption. I have a friend who didn’t realize the extent of her parents’ wealth until after her father died (her mother died years before). She and her sister inherited stupid rich fuck you money. She grew up comfortable but not spoiled rotten. My family was pretty well off until I was about 15, lived in a large country style home, nice cars etc and then for a number of reasons ended up living in a shitty single wide mobile home and slept on the floor with my brothers and sisters because it was a one bedroom. I saw both sides of the coin. My rich friends growing up seemed to be aware early on that they were rich and they were pretty cruel to kids who were perceived as poor, particularly if they were non white. I am non white but because my parents had money they just kind of accepted me and behaved how they would if I was white, meaning they’d say all kinds of racist jokes around me and expect me to say nothing and just go along with it. It was almost like their money gave them license to be shitty people. So they were keenly aware that they were privileged and weaponized it.

When I lived around poor people they seemed way more down to earth and genuine. Yeah there were some shitty people but it seemed to come from a place of struggling to get through life. There were no rich people at our school so a lot of kids didn’t really realize that they were poor relative to the Matt Gray I’ve got somethin’ for your goofy ass shirt and by the same token and people I used to go to school with. They did give me a hard time at first because my clothes were nicer than theirs. I had to dress down to fit in. Mate, there are wildly wildly wealthy people who become adults without realising how skewed their life has been. No way they’d cotton on before a 2yo getting told no by their folks at a shop. The first thing i bought when i got a job early 90s was bought a pair of avia spiders the 17 years of always getting shoes on a budget had taken its toll on my psyche and still remains to this day , brokeness burns itself into your brain one way or another . Yes. I have friends who have parents who are rich and by proxy they are. I talk about the struggle with housing and they’re like “yeah it’s so bad!!!” But then they think paying $850 a month for a house in Washington is bad… Even though the parents bought them that house. They’re still in denial about what exactly it’s like to have wealth.
