Arizona mom of 4. I love and respect my kids teachers, they could read and spell sight words before starting kindergarten. One of my kids was really struggling in third grade. The state says we can’t give kids read aloud or text to speech accommodations anymore on their reading tests AND all our goals have to be written at the kids grade level (yes my kids reading at a 2nd grade level have IEP goals written for the 7th/8th grade level). The state also told us that if we don’t move kids out of the resource room small group setting where the IS teaches them and move them into a general education setting, that they would come in and do it for us.

There are plenty of adults I know who can’t sound out words, poor things kept falling through the cracks year by year. I myself never learned multiplication tables. Not even 10 years ago.

Their idea of essay writing is to plagiarize from Google or AI generate, and when they are called out on it they don’t think I can tell the difference between 8th grade vocabulary and professional writing. I’m gen Z and not a teacher, but I missed a massive amount of school growing up from medical issues. I only just finished my highschool diploma at a community college last year as a 23 year old, and at 24 I am now over halfway through my first year of earning my associates degree. It should surprise no one that I have some pretty massive knowledge gaps, but I am continuously amazed by the fact that I’m not as far behind as many of my slightly younger peers. The latter half of Gen Z that went through/finished highschool during the pandemic are at such a disadvantage. It has definitely helped level the playing field for me a bit, but everything I hear about Gen Alpha makes me very worried for the future of society as a whole. How widespread is this educational divide? Any input from teachers who are not from the USA?

Once I grew up and saw who was running the Department of Education, I knew things were not going to be good. Should this be considered educational warfare to some degree? Schools so underfunded for so long (while we supply billions upon billions a year to arms dealers/manufacturers), curriculum so incredibly lackluster (relative to the day and age we currently live in), and children being flat out ignored by their family (otherwise they’d have the motivation/mindset to actively learn).

I worked as an airport assistant for unaccompanied minors a few years back, and honestly even that feels like a stretch. Saw everything from children to late teens have absolutely no idea how to do something as simple as connect to a specific wifi signal if their phone didn’t do so automatically, or use their browser app. My folks are 71 and they’re less baffled by electronics than these kids, it’s extremely concerning.
