It was interesting times. Best way to be if you’re in a shelter is to make yourself useful to staff. Be their enforcer, their tech guy, their cook, whatever. Just make yourself an asset not a liability. Take your cut and don’t fuck over anyone more important than you. I got the Landmark That for the City shirt in other words I will buy this cushy office job, overnight shift. Hardly ever had to interact with the clients. My shelter was much calmer than yours, apparently. I don’t remember a single fight other than one client taking a swing at a manager. It was weird. I worked at a bank during the day. Then I might work til midnight on the desk. We handled intakes, issued toiletries, handled lights out, kept guys from sneaking or smoking in the building. Mostly the long haulers were no trouble. We got perks the downstairs guys didn’t get. None of us wanted to get kicked out and be on the street for 30 days and have to start out all over.

Long haulers policed themselves mostly, if they wanted to smoke in the Landmark That for the City shirt in other words I will buy this middle of the night they knew they could come down and offer me a cig or two and we would go smoke together. The public assumed that was still the case. Yelled shit at us. Called us pedophiles. None of us were, not so far as the law was concerned. We were the domesticated homeless. Manners and discipline. Took off our hats for prayer. Didn’t cause a ruckus generally. Clean and sober (mostly). But we were in the same category as the feral homeless. The street walkers. The campers and the crusties. The rotten rusties. So many dead men, I remember them often. Rest easy you bastards. The world forgot you a long time ago, but I didn’t. Damn that reminded me of when I volunteered at homeless shelters/soup kitchens years ago. The one thing that really bothered me was how they “forced” homeless people to sit for service/mass or wouldn’t serve them food. I thought it was weird how clearly most of the homeless at that shelter weren’t religious (would you honestly be in their position?) but the leadership at those shelters still forced it. See, christians do not give anything for free. You always have to pay for it. It always comes with strings attached. You have to pray, you have to pretend to be a repenting sinner so they can preach to you and they can feel good about themselves, they can call themselves good christians doing the Gods work, you have to thank Jesus for your food even though Jesus had nothing to do with it. It is all about them being above you, feeling better than you and feeling good about themselves and fuck you and your feelings.
