So colorism is a huge problem in our culture. Constantly fed images and media of lighter skinned people = good & what we should aspire to be. Remember Fair & Lovely? In laws saying to men don’t marry someone dark your babies will come out dark. A lot of dark actresses were not prioritized. Even dark men get comments from people who themselves are dark! It’s a problem within our society. 30+f, dark skinned and still hear mean colorist comments occasionally. From Pani puri wala to relatives and friends. Are they all bad people? Nope. Growing up the teachers always picked on me at school thinking dark people are dumb, even though my grades were good. People were always suggesting different skin lightening products. I always, always felt the disapproval, dismissal towards the color of my skin. People would prefer calling me as Kali as if I don’t have a name. This was back in Odisha. In my 20’s, I moved cities for work and settled in south India, where every 5 out of 10 people are dark skinned. I noticed the immediate shift in the gaze of people. No judgements, no hatred. I loved it and have been here since. Even now when I visit Odisha, I get to hear comments occasionally. I would occasionally respond aptly or educate them. Mostly I ignore them now. I’m happy in my skin and don’t have the patience to engage in any negativity towards it.
