It’s mere observation of your actions, thoughts, emotions, sensations etc. Just as seeing, hearing and sensations you feel does not require any effort, observation of your life also requires no effort. What you should understand if that you are always aware. The amount of attention you have at any moment is constant. If you realize that your attention is waning, it’s not because attention itself is reduced but is directed to other things, like thoughts or emotions which are far more seductive than breath. If you don’t focus on your thoughts then all your attention is available for breath, but this seldom happens. We all have thoughts and they leak some of our attention. The whole goal is to be able to direct your whole attention to the present moment, but this happens only with time and practice. Everytime your attention wavers from your breath, and you’re conscious of it, bring it back. Slowly your thoughts will not take as much attention as it did. None of this requires effort. Observe where the attention is right now and slowly bring it back to your breath. In the beginning thoughts will take up much of your attention, and that doesn’t mean you have to take effort to keep it focused on the breath. No. Just patiently redirect it, and do this again and again. It’s like a mental muscle. The more you do it, it becomes more easier to place attention on the breath.
