There are few garments as polarizing as the I Tackled 100 Days Of School Football Shirt in addition I really love this skinny jean. On TikTok, Gen Z is saying that pin-thin denim is officially out of style—yet many millennials, who grew up with the trend in the aughts, still have a strong love for them. Personally, I am reminded of wearing skinny jeans in high school in the late 2000s, when they had a huge moment. I would quite literally squeeze myself into women’s jeans—the tighter, the better!—and modeled my entire jean wardrobe after the styles worn by stars like Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan. These days, I’ve given my skinny jeans a rest, but the tight jean look still lives on. Denim brands such as J Brand, Levi’s, Wrangler, and more continue to sell them as a classic offering; skinny jeans have moved past a fad, and are now a seasonless wardrobe staple. Yet, in the land of celebrities, there’s a new hot jean in town that’s threatening to steal the skinny jean’s spotlight entirely: Big, baggy denim.Over the past few weeks, stylish stars such as Hailey Bieber, Tracee Ellis Ross, Bella Hadid, Katie Holmes, and more have all stepped out in denim that is more roomy and wide-legged. The movement makes sense, given the current times: Over the past year, we’ve all gravitated towards dressing for comfort, so why wouldn’t we approach our jeans that way? Celebrities have styled the big jeans in a variety of chic ways, offsetting their slouchy look with tailored coats, sky-high stilettos, and the It bags. Whereas the skinny jean dresses up and streamlines any outfit, the baggy jean has the opposite effect and gives any outfit a cool, effortless feel. Plus, they are decidedly much comfier, too—what’s not to love?It turns out, stars are not alone in their skinny jean fatigue, either. I asked some of my colleagues their thoughts on the new baggy denim look—and many of them are ready to retire their skinny jeans, too. “I’m glad to see skinny jeans go,” says Cassandra Pintro, editorial producer. “I’ve always been biased toward fashion that feels more freeing, and skinny jeans are not the match for that.” Beauty writer Akili King agrees. “I don’t really wear skinny jeans; I love a mom jean or wide-leg jean,” she says. “I love being comfy and not restricted.”Market editor Rachel Besser also echoes the sentiment—though she’s not ruling super-slim jeans out entirely. She says, “I loathe skinny jeans and wearing them makes me feel like I am on a parade float, nude, with unflattering fluorescent lighting—but, a few years ago, I felt the same about flip flops, so maybe I love skinny jeans?” She’s not wrong: As with any trend, skinny jeans will likely be worn by all the stars in a few months, and the cycle will start all over again. But for now, it’s all about channeling three words—Big jean energy.Below, shop 11

Demi Moore’s look in Now and Then perplexes me, fascinates me, and ignites me. The 1995 film focuses on a group of four friends from the I Tackled 100 Days Of School Football Shirt in addition I really love this ’70s who go on coming-of-age adventures, which range from solving an age-old fictional murder to kissing boys, and the women they grew up to be 20 years later. The young versions of these women are a destined-for-showbiz “Teeny” (Thora Birch); a rebellious Roberta (Christina Ricci); a naive Chrissy (Ashleigh Aston Moore); and an imaginative Samantha (Gaby Hoffman). Fast-forward, and Roberta is now an obstetrician played by a deadpan Rosie O’Donnell; Teeny is a limo-riding TV host played by Melanie Griffith; Chrissy, pregnant and ready-to-pop, is played by Rita Wilson; and Samantha is now Moore, who has grown into a Marlboro-Red-chain-smoking sci-fi author with obviously a penchant for outré suiting.Samantha fits the oddball, creative, career-driven archetype and certainly dresses the part. While Roberta wears a denim top, her glamour gal pal Teeny wears a cream skirt suit, and Chrissy is decked out in florals, Samantha arrives at this reunion in a three-piece suit. Yes, she wore a baggy, pinstriped suit to hang out at a quaint, American-dream house. There’s a striped top with an oversized collar, a chunky black tie, a burgundy knit sweater vest, and then the oversized blazer and pants. The whole look reminds me of the feeling when you have a multivitamin stuck in the back of your throat: It’s suffocatingly buttoned-up.In case that wasn’t enough on its own, it’s all finished off with a tiny pair of tinted circular sunglasses—the size of multivitamins themselves—and a pair of black and white brogues that give me major Charlie Chaplin vibes. Her hair is done up in a braid crown like the former prime minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, and she arrives at a pregnant friend’s door with a cigarette in her mouth. I can imagine the writer’s room coming up with Samantha’s grown-up look. “She’s a weird writer. What do writers wear? Let’s put her in a big ol’ three-piece suit and give her a cigarette.”While Samantha looks like she’s cosplaying T.S. Eliot twilight-zoned into suburbia, it is bizarrely entertaining. I’d go as far as to say even a little bit chic. When I posted the image to Instagram, it sparked a bevy of responses regarding Samantha’s look. The archive researcher @jordenautumn_ commented that it was giving her “’90s cyberpunk giving a little Wales Bonner and a little JPG.” She isn’t wrong. It is reminiscent of the Fall 2002 Jean Paul Gaultier show, with the androgynous Omahyra Mota strutting down the runway in a men’s suit with a cigarette hanging from her mouth. There is also a bit of John Galliano for Dior in Spring 2008, when women walked the runway in three-piece suits (albeit Galliano’s versions were a bit more slinky and sexy). Today, Samantha’s suit is reminiscent of not only that slouchy cool of Wales Bonner, but also the artful bagginess of fellow London-based label Eftychia and the reworked traditional suiting by Ella Boucht. In fact, it seems like something belle of the street Bella Hadid could step out in: Back in March 2020, she walked out in Paris wearing a three-piece suit by Dilara Findikoglu, sans a jacket. There is a definite try-hard effect: Samantha did not have to have a knit vest to drive the point home that she is, yes, a free-spirited creative and writes about aliens. But I’m also transfixed. The collar is so big it reminds me of a bell bottom and the tie looks so tight I can feel it around my own neck. But the exaggerated combination and their overblown proportions work. At the end of the film, she ends up shedding the look and taking her hair down. I almost wish she didn’t. Sometimes, taking a risk that’s so weirdo-fantastic pays off more than, say, Teeny’s tasteful cream suit. At least, I’m only thinking about one of them 25 years later.
