You really do need to make more money than $45k each if you’re going to live that close to NYC. I was raised in Central NJ and still work there, but moved a year and a half ago to Bordentown and it’s so much more affordable. My girlfriend and I pull in $200k/year and didn’t go crazy when we bought a house so we’re comfortable. Yeah it’s tough. I’m freelancing and she’s in child welfare. Neither are super well paying. My wife may be moving into private practice soon which will increase our bottom line a lot, but I still have to figure my I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled pig bbq T-Shirt but in fact I love this shit out. I mean assuming you don’t have kids and luxury car payments, $90k is pretty doable. I live in central jersey on $85k, bills are tight, but there’s enough to save for stuff. My rent is $2k per month, just for more perspective Yeah my rent right now is handleable but went up twice in two years. I don’t trust our landlord to not do it again.

Yea that’s why when my rent went up $25/month last September, I renewed my lease for 2 years. So they can’t fuck with me for 18 months, and at that point, my time has been served in jersey, and I’ll be on to the I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled pig bbq T-Shirt but in fact I love this next. Yea I speak about my time in jersey as a jail sentence, and at times it feels that way, but it’s not so bad here. However I don’t see any longevity here as it’s way too congested and expensive. I’m on a work trip in Detroit at the moment, and I’m just blown away by how empty everything is. The highways, airports, the towns. And everything is like half price. It’s a big change of pace from jersey lifestyle. My dad has done business trips to Ann Arbor (live in central NJ), says even though he’s on business it’s so much nicer there that it feels like a vacation. Never been to Michigan myself so I can’t confirm I’ve spent some time in Ann Arbor and I did enjoy it. Also a few trips to Detroit for work. I really didn’t hate it at all, it has its heart and charm but man were some drives around town really fucking depressing. But I will say the last time I was there I had probably the best pizza I’ve ever had outside of Jersey. Wish I could remember the name of the place. Detroit style pies are really good in their own way
