I feel this same way. I am never sure how to describe a person bc in todays world it’s bad to say anything like that. I got chewed out at work once for being rude to a customer. She left a written report with the company and described me by my attire, gender and height. The only problem was, I, a 5’10” white, slim, guy was not the person she was attempting to describe but was instead my 6’3″, athletic, black colleague. We both found it hilarious and ridiculous in equal measure. There are some groups that don’t want to hear/use some words. And there are other groups that accept/use the same words. I remember use the word “black” to refer to one of my friends and a new guy in this group said that “black” is offensive, I should use “brown”.

Was there a small Black guy in the room? Not racist as long as he was big and black. Specifically big. White people have a tendency to call black men “big” even if they’re not big. So that would be problematic. Other than that, I’d say you’re ok and you don’t need to worry about it anymore. Its not bad. People have to get over themselves. Having said that. If there’s another way to describe someone its probably nicer to use that description. In your case the guys prominent features are prob that he is big and he is black. Nothing wrong with that. If he was a skinny white guy id prob use those descriptive words as well lol. Not exactly and personally I find it more offensive when someone people refuse to say “black” …at the same time I’m very certain that people would have known exactly who you were describing if you’d just said “big guy”. At the same time you should be mindful that other people may find it offensive and they’re not necessarily wrong either. Some people just aren’t comfortable with certain things and you should be respectful of that, maybe you weren’t being racist but it could be seen as tactless. Maybe the person didn’t even think you were being racist but that you were being uncouth. Also some people are very validity hypersensitive about certain things, it’s good to be mindful of the words that come out of your mouth.
