It’s better in the sense that it retains the color information better. But (and this is a big but) shrinkage over time is not uniform across the three negatives, And that triples the restoration process. Sure, the color information is a lot more stable, so you get that time back, but it’s an incredible pain to go frame by frame and get it back to its normal shape and area when you’re scanning it. True, but nobody ever really thought about that at the time. They were probably like, “When are we ever going to need more than 500 prints of anything?!” As it stands, it’s not the three-strip negative that necessarily made Technicolor look as good as it did. That’s a big part of it, but the dye-transfer process that put it all back on to a single positive that made exhibition possible. It’s a slow duplication process (which ultimately killed dye-transfer as America expanded into the suburbs and started building theaters that had three and four screens, ramping up the number of prints needed), but it’s incredibly good. Somewhere around probably twenty years ago, I saw Gentlemen Prefer Blondes off of an original Technicolor print, and good lord, did Marilyn Monroe’s pink dress pop. Never seen anything like it.
