But there isn’t an ethical doctor alive that would suggest someone incapable of informed consent undergo a surgery that may be important emotionally, but isn’t necessary from the History Teacher Retirement Loading Retired Appreciation Design T-Shirt but in fact I love this physical perspective that they would directly die from it. That would be absolutely bonkers. Think about it this way: let’s say you had a wife. Once in the past, she told you that she’s very uncomfortable with how small her breasts were and would like larger breasts. So much so that she is depressed to the point where she cannot get out of bed and has lost her job, barely even eating. One day, she has an unrelated medical problem pop up that requires the hospital to place her in a medically-induced coma in order to survive and recover. Would it be ethical to, while she’s in that coma, ask a surgeon to perform breast augmentation surgery on her? Would it be ethical for a surgeon to do so? The answer to both these questions is: absolutely not! No matter how medically necessary that such a surgery could be considered based on her significant dysphoria (which even cis folks can experience), she is not conscious, and therefore in no condition to hear and understand the risks behind that surgery, and so she cannot consent.

History Teacher Retirement Loading Retired Appreciation Design T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

I apologize that that’s the History Teacher Retirement Loading Retired Appreciation Design T-Shirt but in fact I love this best analogy I can think of–unconsciousness and a brain early in mental development are hardly the same, which I understand. I was attempting to come up with an example of inability to consent that could occur within an otherwise capable adult. Surgery is rare, but hormone suppressants and counseling is becoming increasingly common. Those start as early as possible, well before 13 at times, to mitigate the effects of the person’s birth sex. Maybe this is a side conversation, but parents make irreversible decisions for their infant kids about their genitals every day. Has no one else heard of circumcision? As is typical in right wing circles, they take the most extreme examples of something that rarely happens, but has a tiny basis in truth, and run as if it’s the norm.
