Necessary on trips of more than 10 days I’d say. Cafe, books, tablet, library, spa, swimming pool. Good weather chill on the Getting older sucks used to wake up feeling like million bucks T-Shirt in other words I will buy this balcony, city park, local hill etc. Always easier to stomach on bad weather days as it doesn’t feel like you’re losing out on time or experience. Sometimes you just need to relax and reboot! I get exhausted when I travel. Being tired while sightseeing takes away from the experience. One day on a Spain tour all 35 of us were so tired we slept till 1pm and all wound up at the same restaurant. I felt so guilty about it but everyone did the same thing. Granted I wasn’t totally solo on that trip but I booked it alone. I’m definitely the woman who sleeps little and runs to see every site and take in every experience possible when I’m traveling. I also listen to my body and mind, learned that the hard way. If I’m feeling burned out, overwhelmed, etc I take the time I need to regroup so I can enjoy my trip. Maybe I stay in my room and nap or watch a show, maybe I sit in a park or a cafe and read, I just do what’s necessary to feel relaxed so I can appreciate the journey. I used to hike a lot, it’s the HYOH mindset and to me it’s really important in to live that way as much as you can, makes life more enjoyable.

Most of my zero days have been down to illness or jetlag. For similar reasons I didn’t mind hunkering down in my Canadian hotel rooms to enjoy the rain fall on the patio in the comfort of a bath robe after a bath salt soak. As much as we pay for some hotels, we may as well enjoy all of their perks. In fact, my favorite time of day in hotels is 10am to 3pm when it’s so much more calm and quiet, save for vacuums in the rooms next door. I intentionally try to book stays of no less than 2 nights everywhere to make sure I have that midday time (also makes it easier to avail yourself of laundry services if needed, as most hotels require pick up prior to 9am and delivery after 7pm).
