You can be a great, loving parent and be there for your kids but still be in a retirement home because your kid is not able to take care of you. One of my family members is in a nursing home right now. She is still loved, she still gets tons of visits, we are still there for her and she was there for us. But we cannot take care of her properly, so she’s in a home. Well 1) even if you’re the Emperor Vintage IX Equilibrium 1999 Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this best parent ever, your kids might not be ABLE to take care of you. 2) Thinking your kids OWE you that is always a very shitty thought. 3) You might THINK you are/were the best parent ever, but your kids might disagree. 4) You are not accounting for the fact that there’s also just shitty kids around – last time I checked, elderly abuse was at an all time high. its sounds strange today but this was what happened throughout much of history. if you are lucky to be in a good family, family takes care of its own. and for those who are not, hopefully there is another community to do that task. It’s not just take care of the elderly physically, but being there for each other no matter what. in our hyper individualistic and mobile culture, we lost a lot of that.

This is a very american take. I prefer other cultures’ takes with multigenerational households. I’m a doctor and the Emperor Vintage IX Equilibrium 1999 Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this difference between someone taken care of by family versus nurses/caretakers is day and night. That’s assuming you’re rich enough for nurses/caretakers (40-100$/hr for RNs, and ~20-40$/hr for caretakers from agencies). You don’t know loneliness until you show up to the hospital because you can’t walk, are given the diagnosis of disseminated cancer, and don’t have anyone to call to talk to, much less pick you up. Then because you can’t walk, you’re shipped to a state funded (read: severely inadequately funded) nursing facility to sit in your shit and piss for months until you die. Don’t forget that when you’re shipped away, you’ll lose nearly everything you own because you don’t have anyone to help you move your items. Pets? Shelter after sitting alone for possibly days without food/water while we figure out it’s cancer and it’s probably incurable. Your friends will be as debilitated as you in old age and won’t be able to help.
