So I feel like I’ve been seeing transgender stuff everywhere lately and I’ve been of the Don’t Be Afraid Llama-nade T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this mindset of just letting people do what they want to do. However, a lot of these posts are around children transitioning. In my naive brain I was just thinking these kids were “cross dressing” for lack of better words. But some articles have talked about doing hormone therapy, sex changing surgery, etc when these kids are 13 years old. Is this actually happening?? Why not allow these kids to identify as whoever they want but wait until they are adults for physically altering drugs/surgery? EDIT: This post blew up way more than I was expecting. My conclusion is that it a gender reassignment surgery on a minor has happened but it’s an extremely rare circumstance and most reasonable trans people (or at least the ones who have commented here) say that waiting until adulthood is the norm. Please don’t use this post to spread hate. “The Komodo analysis of insurance claims found 56 genital surgeries among patients ages 13 to 17 with a prior gender dysphoria diagnosis from 2019 to 2021. Among teens, “top surgery” to remove breasts is more common. In the three years ending in 2021, at least 776 mastectomies were performed in the United States on patients ages 13 to 17 with a gender dysphoria diagnosis, according to Komodo’s data analysis of insurance claims. Specifically it’s counting surgery for people with an existing dysphoria diagnosis, which wouldn’t include gynechomastia They would also not show up in medical insurance claims since they are most commonly felt to be cosmetic surgeries. The data on minors that had surgery is only a 3 year period from 2019-2021. In that period, only 56 genital surgeries were performed, while 776 mastectomies were performed in that same period. So while genital reassignment surgery does occur in children in the US, it only occurs for 00.045% of children that are given the diagnosis of gender dysmorphia. I’m glad this thread is recognizing the nuance in the data, and ask questions. I really am. If only we looked at everything with such a critical eye. Good thread.
