I’ve been teaching college for the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but past 6 years, 100 and 200 level courses, so mainly kids right outta high school. In that time, I’ve seen a sharp drop off in what I can reasonably expect students to accomplish. I’ve dumbed down everything, then dumbed it down some more, to the point where a student more or less just has to show up and pay attention to pass. No real problem solving is involved anymore, just basic testing for a cursory understanding of the material. I feel guilty because I teach computer science, which leads to an industry famous for its brutal tech interviews. But students show up not knowing how to save a file, who don’t read my syllabus or listen when I read it to them, who ignore emails, and who only care about my class when they are failing. If they put half the effort into the material as they did in trying to convince me to excuse an entire semester of late or missing work, they’d be coding experts.

I have no idea what’s going on. Hopefully it’s a blip and not the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but fall of civilization, because kids are fucking dumb these days (no offense zoomers, it’s probably just confirmation bias!) More than ten years back I spent a year teaching eleventh grade physics in Florida and after introducing f=ma none of them could figure out how to solve for a. But if a national strike did somehow happen… You know what’s gonna happen next. State and National Guard soldiers become teachers. It happened in some Nursing homes. Lack of funding, creating a dumber society is the goal. Its what the Republicans have been doing since the 80s and it’s working really well right now. How are these kids still passing? In my youth, it was rare, but not impossible, to hear of students who needed to repeat a grade to advance. How are they reaching you with so few skills, and how are they able to advance after that? Are they being gifted progress through either administrative intervention or self-interest? At least when I’m 90 and still have to work because I’ll never be able to financially retire, I won’t have to worry about the younger generations taking my job. Of course this is also a good excuse to have robots and AI do everything I tell you all it’s the administration and school boards which have, for all intents and purposes, castrated teacher’s abilities to effectively teach. There is zero support. As someone who has listened to elementary school teachers tell their horror stories, all it takes is one maladjusted child disrupting constantly to destroy the entire classroom experience for all of the kids. Add on to the fact that no sort of support staff available for these kids and all you get is 75/25 focus of the teacher trying to teach through the “problem” child. Two or three of these types with no support from the front office and you are all but helpless.

One of the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but stories which sent my jaw to the floor was one where a (elementary aged) boy punched his pregnant teacher in the stomach, was sent to some room away from the class by the principal, then allowed to come back. That’s unacceptable and it really has me wondering what these wealthy school districts are allocating their funds towards, because it’s obviously not towards helping out these teachers with 25+ students… I’m a college-aged gen z kid and most younger ppl I’ve interacted with seem like functional human beings… can someone elaborate on this trend? Is it new? Is it underpriveleged backgrounds or some other socioeconomic factor? I’ve personally not encountered anyone with brainrot so severe they can’t grasp basic concepts, but I guess I exist in a pretty privileged circle.

Arizona mom of 4. I love and respect my kids teachers, they could read and spell sight words before starting kindergarten. One of my kids was really struggling in third grade. It took 6 iep meetings, and getting the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but school board involved to hold him back. They just wanted to keep passing him along even though the teacher completely agreed with me. We had to have a meeting because the state dinged the district for having too many IEP students fail their state tests. I’m in Ohio. I got 7th and 8th Graders reading at 2nd and 3rd grade levels. Doesn’t matter, those kids take their grade level test. The state says we can’t give kids read aloud or text to speech accommodations anymore on their reading tests AND all our goals have to be written at the kids grade level (yes my kids reading at a 2nd grade level have IEP goals written for the 7th/8th grade level). The state also told us that if we don’t move kids out of the resource room small group setting where the IS teaches them and move them into a general education setting, that they would come in and do it for us.

So after all this, I sit in a meeting with this big wig special ed person from the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but state and their solution for getting these kids to start passing these tests that are 4+ grades beyond where they are at academically is to…. Pull the kids into a small group setting more often…. The very thing they told us two years ago we absolutely needed to stop doing or else. Nobody who can make decisions that matter are going to care. Why? Because this will mostly ruin the lives of poor people, and the rich can always pay to have their kids fast-tracked for academic credentials – no matter how incompetent they may be. Then there is nepotism on top, their kids will be fine. These kids are being intentionally left behind, because the rich would rather live in decadence, than build society. In my area there would be 1 teacher to 30+ kids, they tried their best with everyone. There are plenty of adults I know who can’t sound out words, poor things kept falling through the cracks year by year. I myself never learned multiplication tables. Not even 10 years ago.
Has anyone considered all the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but chemicals and food additives in the American diet has destroyed the brains of the kids? Something is not right with these kids cognitively. As a young, childless women in science, is there anything that non-teachers can do to help? I had no idea it was this bad simply because i’m not around children or teachers in everyday life. I have 8th graders who can’t peer edit because their own grammar is so bad they don’t know what proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure is supposed to look like. Their idea of essay writing is to plagiarize from Google or AI generate, and when they are called out on it they don’t think I can tell the difference between 8th grade vocabulary and professional writing. I’m gen Z and not a teacher, but I missed a massive amount of school growing up from medical issues. I only just finished my highschool diploma at a community college last year as a 23 year old, and at 24 I am now over halfway through my first year of earning my associates degree. It should surprise no one that I have some pretty massive knowledge gaps, but I am continuously amazed by the fact that I’m not as far behind as many of my slightly younger peers. The latter half of Gen Z that went through/finished highschool during the pandemic are at such a disadvantage. It has definitely helped level the playing field for me a bit, but everything I hear about Gen Alpha makes me very worried for the future of society as a whole. How widespread is this educational divide? Any input from teachers who are not from the USA?
Not a teacher but it’s a darn shame what a lot of these kids are bringing to the Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Love For The Big Shirt it is in the first place but table. The sad reality of it is that there are multiple factors playing into this. Parents not advocating for their children, misusing technology as a way to “deal with” their children, the entitlement of many kids because their parents raised them to be that way, etc. These lessons should have been established long before entering school and unfortunately the children will suffer and future generations will as well Dedicated to open discussion about all things teaching. Back to TopJesus. I was a bit of a slow learner when younger because of distractions, but this thread… holy shit. Once I grew up and saw who was running the Department of Education, I knew things were not going to be good. Should this be considered educational warfare to some degree? Schools so underfunded for so long (while we supply billions upon billions a year to arms dealers/manufacturers), curriculum so incredibly lackluster (relative to the day and age we currently live in), and children being flat out ignored by their family (otherwise they’d have the motivation/mindset to actively learn).
