the Born in the 80s but the 90s made me T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this older generation solely relies on the younger generations to just … pay more for everything so they don’t have to? Yeah the fact the vast majority worked their whole lives for that pension and built the NZ we live in today, which against popular opinion is actually a pretty sweet place to live. I for one am fine living in a society that cares as much as possible for their elderly even at a bit of cost to myself. Because i truly hope in 60 years im not sitting in care home and the vast majority of NZers think im only alive to leech off the younger generation like yourself All fine, really, yeah, the universal pension was set up as part of a reciprocal society where the older generations at the time gave today’s older folks affordable housing supply and debt free education and entry to the work force. We’ve gotten rid of that reciprocity and also allowed our older generations to live beyond their means by saddling following generations with huge housing debts.

The problem being that one generation (the Born in the 80s but the 90s made me T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this boomers) gets an absolutely free ride when it comes to pensions/healthcare which is creating significant intergenerational inequality. The boomers during their life mostly didn’t need to pay high taxes to fund healthcare and pensions because the previous few generations benefited far less from these services. So now you and I will be paying high taxes to pay the bill that the boomers skipped out on. The current system works so that you and me will rely on the taxes of our children to feed us in our old age (which is a recipe for insolvency). The question becomes how we break this cycle, the logical solution is to mandate that people save for retirement over their entire life (like Australia has) but this has the problem of screwing my generation again as whilst the next generation(and the nation) benefits from not having to pay taxes to pay for my superannuation, I’m having to simultaneously pay for the boomers pension and my own future savings.
