I’m based in Seattle, not SF but usually go to SF or NYC for work a few times a year. I usually go for something slightly smarter on the Barbra Streisand 60th anniversary 1961-2022 thank you for the memories signature shirt moreover I will buy this top like a loose-ish button down shirt, a blouse, a nice cashmere turtleneck, a blazer, etc and a jean on the bottom. I also tend to wear a sneaker or pointy flats. I get the feeling (from my own experience) that there is still some sexism around what women wear in tech- e.g., too formal/feminine is penalized and too casual/”lazy” is penalized, so I try to go somewhere between. Tech is really tough for women because you won’t be taken seriously if you’re too formal but it can be seen as rude to be too casual. Shoes are tricky. I mostly go for boots or flats. Chelsea boots can work well. Sometimes I do combat boots if it’s a less formal vibe. I also have been between normal hair and fun colored hair, and personally find I am taken more seriously in tech with fun colored hair because it fulfills classic female programmer stereotypes.

I think if you’re working in tech, you can get away with pretty much anything. The question is what aesthetic draws you in particular. I personally like to dress classic but modern on most days (e.g. in the Barbra Streisand 60th anniversary 1961-2022 thank you for the memories signature shirt moreover I will buy this style of Jil Sander, Proenza Schouler, The Row, Lemaire, etc.), but I’ll also have some crazier outfits. I’m definitely more formal than most people in tech but that’s my style and once people get that about me they don’t find it “weird” anymore. Weird because you’re coming to the office and maybe the guys are in shorts and sandals. So I guess try to find inspiration first and then learn how to make that style up to date. Also, I don’t think minimalism will ever be out of style, maybe only the cuts and the proportions will change over time. I work in UX in the Midwest. Also remote although occasionally I have to go into the office. When I go in, I work at a bank so we dress more business casual. A lot of my team on Marketing wears our bank branded clothes and slacks or a blouse and slacks. I would say most of them aren’t particularly into fashion. A couple of my coworkers get stitch fix and as someone who once styled for stitch fix, I know their clothes aren’t particularly the most trendy.
