But the Awesome shohei Ohtani Los Angeles Angels Baseball 2023 shirt it is in the first place but second issue is that this is going to a sensitive subject and complaining about may cause you issues in the workplace. I’m going to ask that we stick to legal discussion, and not a discussion about the merits or value of cultural belief systems. My take is the issue isn’t with the ceremony, it’s with the employer. It’s a religious ceremony so you have to accept this kind of thing (as a fan of Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Fry, Richard Dawkins, etc. I’d argue you don’t but that might not be the hill you want to die on at work). Replace woman on her period with some other category of human that gets excluded (person with skin darker than an arbitrary shade, trans person, gay person, handicapped person, person who practices another faith, etc.) and think about how HR would feel about it. Assuming this was an oversight and your employer wasn’t aware beforehand I’d say you deserve an apology at the very least. If your employer was aware this was unacceptable. Management going first and not discreetly warning the employees who menstruate pushes this into unacceptable territory.

A mandatory religious ceremony (of any religion) is an issue as well. I get mandatory cultural training, if anything that just makes you a better person, but forcing you to participate in a ceremony rings alarm bells with me. I’ve been there (that’s a story for another day, one where I’m not with the Awesome shohei Ohtani Los Angeles Angels Baseball 2023 shirt it is in the first place but same employer) and I’m still upset about it. Super inappropriate on the part of your workplace. I would seriously consider speaking with an employment lawyer. You could also file a complaint with the human rights tribunal. That ceremony is not your culture and you were mandated to attend and then they called you out and excluded you because you are a woman. Not okay. I’m guessing that your boss was just as surprised as you were when the question about periods was raised. Which would be a factor if you complain to HR. Talk to your HR head and bring up your concerns. Simply explain why you are concerned that you were forced to lie or to be singled out and why that wasn’t made known well ahead. Furthermore, it appears the company supports that kind of activity when it is exclusionary.
