When I worked as a consultant we could spend 50-50 company time and personal time studying for personal certs, because it benefited yourself and the August September Crushtober November Houston shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this company, but no one else. Most of my team is in India and when I intimated that I was learning during work hours (skills that were clearly necessary to do my job, and also skills that they were informed that I did not have when I joined) I immediately turned into a pariah. In fact, the whole team was told to get a certification, but that there would be no work time available for learning, and the whole US team basically said ok and then studied during work hours. Not normal, but if it is your first job and you don’t have an easy alternative, it might be better to bear with it until you accrue enough experience to find a better role. Heck, learn as much as you can, use the new skills you learn to land a much better job, then passive aggressively rub it in by emphatically thanking your supervisor for making you do the off-the-clock learning when you put in your two weeks notice, making sure they are aware that you got the job because of the learning. Maybe even give a little extra thanks for making you do it off the clock, so you wouldn’t feel guilty about doing training during company time and then bailing out and giving another company all of the benefits. (I can’t say this is a great way to handle it, but in a situation like yours, oh boy would I be tempted to do that on the way out!)

It’s not fair and potentially a legal issue. Asking you to do work or work related projects in your personal time is a form of compensation theft as you are doing work for your employer for free.
