I think a lot of it has to do with everything being done on a computer. Now I will be honest, I can’t do math in my head and never could, I have to work things out on paper. But, I went to school before computers were a thing. My daughter knows what an even number is, what colors mixed together will look like, her parents names, phone numbers and addresses. I read books to her till she started reading on her own. She goes to a very highly ranked school luckily and has a mom who limits screen time and encourages crafts. My friends kids are way behind in school and have severe attitude issues. I’d like to think my friends limit screentime and play with their children but I cannot be certain. Not a teacher, But I am part of gen z and you are right. I was always considered a “bright kid” but as I grew up I felt that wasn’t at all true. Despite this there are times where I look at my peers like they are crazy for what they don’t know. But then after reading this I realize that there’s stuff I don’t know either. No specific example here but rather of vocabulary and writing. I’m a public librarian helping to run a “reading comprehension catch up” program. We meet and revise the lessons for next week to make sure nobody falls behind. This is the first year I’m joining the program, but the library has run it for the last eight. The person running it has said that the numbers have steadily increased over the course of the last eight but has spiked up high in the last 2-3. The program targets 4th-6th graders and she said that last year, most of them read at a 2nd-3rd grade level. We’re not sure we’re going to have enough volunteers to teach all of the people signing up and we might have to turn some people away.
